What to Buy in Turkey 2026: 20 Souvenirs Actually Worth Bringing Home

Turkish bazaars will seduce you into buying everything — but most of it ends up in a drawer. This guide cuts straight to the 20 things that are genuinely excellent value, high quality and worth the suitcase space. Plus: what to skip, where to buy and how much to pay.

Food and Drink — The Best Edible Souvenirs

1. Turkish Saffron (Safran)
Turkey produces genuine saffron — a fraction of the European price. Look for deep red threads, not orange powder.

  • 💰 Price: €4–12 per gram
  • 📍 Best place: Spice bazaars, Kapalıçarşı, Gaziantep markets

2. Premium Turkish Tea (Çay)
Not the supermarket type. Proper Rize region loose-leaf tea — the real thing.

  • 💰 Price: €3–8 per 100g
  • 📍 Best place: Rize region directly, or spice bazaars in Istanbul

3. Gaziantep Baklava (Vacuum-Packed)
If you visit Gaziantep, bring home vacuum-packed baklava. It lasts 2–3 weeks and tastes nothing like the versions sold in Europe.

  • 💰 Price: €8–15 per 500g
  • 📍 Best place: Güllüoğlu or Koçak in Gaziantep

4. Turkish Delight (Lokum) — Artisan Quality
Not the airport boxes. Hand-made lokum from a proper confectionery with pistachios, rose water or pomegranate.

  • 💰 Price: €5–12 per 500g
  • 📍 Best place: Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir (Istanbul), or local confectioneries

5. Antep Fıstığı (Pistachios)
Gaziantep pistachios are some of the world's finest. Buy in their shells for freshness.

  • 💰 Price: €8–15 per kg
  • 📍 Best place: Gaziantep nut shops, spice bazaars

6. Turkish Spice Mixes
Za'atar, sumac, dried mint, red pepper flakes (pul biber), cumin — buy mixed spice sets.

  • 💰 Price: €2–5 per package
  • 📍 Best place: Mısır Çarşısı (Egyptian Bazaar) Istanbul

Textiles — Turkey's Most Underrated Exports

7. Turkish Towels (Peshtemal/Hammam Towel)
Flat-woven, lightweight, quick-drying, beautiful. Lasts for years. The best souvenir Turkey offers.

  • 💰 Price: €12–35 per towel (genuine cotton)
  • 📍 Best place: Grand Bazaar Istanbul, Antalya old town, coastal towns
  • ⚠️ Avoid: Airport shops — overpriced

8. Hand-Embroidered Linen
Tablecloths, napkins, cushion covers with traditional Turkish embroidery.

  • 💰 Price: €15–60 depending on size
  • 📍 Best place: Safranbolu, Kapadokya artisan shops

9. Silk Scarves
Natural silk, hand-dyed. Bursa is Turkey's silk capital.

  • 💰 Price: €20–80 depending on size and quality
  • 📍 Best place: Bursa Koza Han, Grand Bazaar Istanbul

Ceramics and Pottery — Turkey's Most Iconic Crafts

10. Iznik Tiles and Ceramics
Deep cobalt blue and red on white — the classic Turkish pattern. Genuine Iznik tiles are expensive but lasting.

  • 💰 Price: Tiles from €15, plates from €25
  • 📍 Best place: Iznik town itself, Grand Bazaar Istanbul
  • ⚠️ Authentic Iznik vs tourist copy: look for weight and hand-painting marks

11. Cappadocia Pottery
Made using a unique technique with two people throwing — the distinctive terracotta style.

  • 💰 Price: €15–50 per piece
  • 📍 Best place: Avanos town, Cappadocia

12. Hand-Painted Plates and Bowls
Every region has its own style. Çanakkale blue, Kütahya polychrome, Bursa green.

  • 💰 Price: €10–40 per piece
  • 📍 Best place: Regional artisan shops, not airport duty free

Leather and Silver — Worth the Investment

13. Genuine Leather Goods
Turkey's leather quality is excellent — jackets, bags, belts, wallets. Buy from established shops, not market stalls.

  • 💰 Price: Wallets from €25, bags from €60, jackets from €150
  • 📍 Best place: Istanbul leather district (Kapalıçarşı area), Kusadası

14. Midyat Silver Filigree
Midyat (near Mardin) is Turkey's silver filigree capital. Intricate hand-worked silver jewellery.

  • 💰 Price: €15–80 depending on piece
  • 📍 Best place: Midyat town bazaar

Beauty and Wellness

15. Rose Oil and Rose Water
Turkish rose oil (from Isparta province) is world-class. Pure, concentrated, long-lasting.

  • 💰 Price: €8–25 per bottle
  • 📍 Best place: Isparta region, spice bazaars

16. Hammam Soap and Kese
Olive oil soap from Antakya or Gaziantep, plus the kese (exfoliating mitt) for a hammam experience at home.

  • 💰 Price: €3–8 for soap, €2–5 for kese
  • 📍 Best place: Any hammam shop, Mısır Çarşısı

17. Natural Black Seed Oil (Çörekotu Yağı)
Nigella sativa oil — used for centuries in Turkish folk medicine. Genuine cold-pressed quality.

  • 💰 Price: €5–15 per bottle
  • 📍 Best place: Herbal shops, spice bazaars

Unique and Culturally Specific

18. Hand-Painted Evil Eye (Nazar Boncuğu)
The genuine glass version from Nazarköy village near İzmir, not the plastic airport version.

  • 💰 Price: €3–20 depending on size and artisan quality
  • 📍 Best place: Nazarköy village, or artisan glassblowers

19. Traditional Copper Items
Handmade copper coffee pots (cezve), trays, bowls — especially from Gaziantep's Bakırcılar Çarşısı.

  • 💰 Price: €15–60 per piece
  • 📍 Best place: Gaziantep Bakırcılar Bazaar, Grand Bazaar Istanbul

20. Kilim Bookmarks or Small Kilim Pieces
Can't carry a full carpet? Small kilim items — bookmarks, coasters, mini wall hangings — carry the craftsmanship without the weight.

  • 💰 Price: €5–20
  • 📍 Best place: Cappadocia, Anatolian village markets

What NOT to Buy in Turkey

  • Airport "Turkish delight" — overpriced, low quality
  • Cheap carpets from tourist shops — often machine-made synthetics sold as handmade wool
  • "Genuine leather" jackets on the street — unverifiable quality
  • Generic ceramic "Turkish coffee sets" — usually Chinese imports
  • Perfume "copies" in bazaars — almost always counterfeit

Shopping Tips for Turkey

  • Bargain in markets — it's expected and normal. Start at 50–60% of asking price.
  • Don't bargain in fixed-price shops — embarrassing and pointless
  • Pay in cash where possible — often gets you a discount
  • Leave suitcase space — you will buy more than you plan
  • Buy region-specific items in their region — Gaziantep baklava in Gaziantep, Rize tea in Rize
