How to Find the Best Restaurants in Turkey: A City-by-City Food Guide 2026

The biggest food mistake tourists make in Turkey is eating near the tourist sites. The restaurants within 200 metres of Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar or Ephesus exist to capture footfall, not to serve good food. The genuinely outstanding Turkish restaurants — the ones that have survived on reputation alone for decades — are almost always a five to ten minute walk from the main crowds.

This guide tells you how to find them, city by city.

The Universal Rules for Finding Good Food in Turkey

Before the city guide, five principles that apply everywhere:

1. Follow the lunch crowd
Turkish office workers and tradespeople eat lunch at 12:00–13:30. A lokanta (traditional canteen-style restaurant) with no empty seats at 12:30 on a Tuesday is reliable. One that is empty at the same time, regardless of how it looks from outside, is not.

2. Look for handwritten menus or menus in Turkish only
A menu that exists only in Turkish — no photos, no English translation — means the restaurant is not targeting tourists. This is a reliable quality signal. A four-language photo menu with pictures of every dish is a tourist trap indicator.

3. Avoid restaurants with touts outside
Any restaurant that employs someone to stand outside and invite passing pedestrians in is, without exception, trading on footfall rather than food quality. Walk past.

4. Eat where the taxi drivers eat
This is clichéd advice that remains true. Taxi drivers know a city's eating landscape better than any review platform. Ask your driver where they eat lunch — and go there.

5. Go earlier than you think
The best börekçi (pastry shops) sell out by 10am. The best lokanta finishes its slow-cooked dishes by 1:30pm. The best fish restaurants at the market sell the best fish at opening. Turkish food culture rewards early risers.

Istanbul — Where to Eat and What

Istanbul is enormous — 15 million people, dozens of distinct neighbourhoods — and its restaurant landscape is correspondingly varied. The key principle: eat in the neighbourhood, not on the tourist route.

Beyoğlu / Cihangir / Karaköy
This is where Istanbul's contemporary food culture is most concentrated. The streets around Cihangir slope down to Karaköy with cafés, wine bars, natural wine shops and restaurants that would hold their own in any European city.

  • For breakfast: Karaköy Güllüoğlu (börek institution, open since 1949) or any of the neighbourhood breakfast spots in Cihangir
  • For lunch: Karaköy covered market area — fish sandwich stalls and small meyhanes
  • For dinner: The streets above Tünel — meyhanes serving cold meze and grilled fish with rakı

Kadıköy (Asian Side)
The best everyday eating in Istanbul is on the Asian side. The Kadıköy market area — a covered food market surrounded by small restaurants and bars — has the best concentration of quality, value and atmosphere in the city.

  • Çiya Sofrası — the most important restaurant in Istanbul for understanding regional Turkish cooking; the owner Musa Dağdeviren collects disappearing regional recipes; the daily menu changes based on what's in season
  • The market area — for breakfast ingredients, fresh produce, cheeses and regional specialities

Eminönü / Kapalıçarşı area
This is tourist territory — but two things are genuinely excellent here:

  • Balık ekmek (fish sandwich) from the boats at Galata Bridge — the most iconic Istanbul street food, and it's actually very good
  • Tarihi Kapalıçarşı Ocakbaşı — grilled meat restaurant inside the bazaar complex; busy with traders not tourists

Gaziantep — Turkey's Undisputed Food Capital

Gaziantep holds a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation — and it has earned it. If you can eat in only one Turkish city for food, make it Gaziantep.

What to eat:

  • Beyran — rich lamb and rice breakfast soup; eaten early morning; available only at specialist beyran restaurants
  • Ali Nazik — kebab on smoked aubergine purée with yoghurt; one of the great Turkish dishes
  • Katmer — flaky breakfast pastry with clotted cream and crushed pistachio; eat it warm, eat it early
  • Baklava — Antep baklava with local pistachios; incomparably better than anything available elsewhere

Where to eat:

  • İmam Çağdaş — operating since 1887; the reference point for Gaziantep baklava; the pistachio version, not the walnut
  • Zekeriya Usta — the beyran institution; eat at the counter, eat early
  • The bazaar streets around Zincirli Bedesten for working-day local food

İzmir — The Aegean Breakfast and Seafood City

İzmir has the best breakfast culture in Turkey. Van breakfast is famous nationally; İzmir breakfast is famous among people who actually know food.

What to eat:

  • İzmir breakfast — a full spread of Aegean cheeses, olives, herbs, pastries and eggs; the oil is local and exceptional
  • Boyoz — a flaky, slightly oily pastry unique to İzmir; eat it warm from the bakery with a glass of ayran
  • Kumru — İzmir's signature sandwich; simit-like bread with sucuk, cheese and tomato; Çeşme version is the original
  • Fresh seafood — at the Kordon waterfront restaurants; order what's freshest that day

Where to eat:

  • Kemeraltı bazaar area — the best concentration of local eating in İzmir; pastry shops, lokanta, fish restaurants
  • Alsancak neighbourhood — evening restaurants, wine bars, seafood

Antalya — Mediterranean Coast Eating

Antalya has a food culture distinct from the Aegean — heavier use of spice, pomegranate molasses and Taurus Mountain herbs.

What to eat:

  • Şiş köfte — flat minced meat skewers grilled over vine wood; better in Antalya than almost anywhere else
  • Hibeş — tahini with garlic and red pepper; a local meze found almost nowhere else in Turkey
  • Piyaz — white bean salad dressed with tahini, vinegar and egg; the definitive Antalya dish; each restaurant has their own version

Where to eat:

  • Kaleiçi (old city) — the historic quarter has good restaurants but prices rise near the tourist zone; aim for the streets one block back from the main circuit
  • Donanma Caddesi — local favourite for working-lunch restaurants

Cappadocia — Eating Well in a Tourist Region

Cappadocia is a tourist region with high food prices and significant quality variation. The cave hotel breakfasts are genuinely excellent. For dinner, the challenge is finding quality at reasonable prices.

What to eat:

  • Testi kebabı — meat and vegetables sealed in a clay pot and slow-cooked over embers; cracked open at the table; the most theatrical dish in Turkey and genuinely delicious
  • Pottery workshop restaurant in Avanos — watching your testi kebabı made and cooked is part of the experience
  • Göreme and Uçhisar — the best restaurant concentration outside the cave hotels; aim for locally-run places rather than hotel restaurants

Practical tip: Walk 10 minutes from the centre of Göreme in any direction. Prices drop and quality often improves.

General Practical Tips

Google Maps reviews — Turkish Google Maps reviews are more reliable than TripAdvisor for local restaurants; look for restaurants with many reviews in Turkish (not English) — this signals a local clientele

Asking at your accommodation — the owner of a small family-run hotel or pension knows exactly where to eat; this advice is almost always better than any app

Market days — every city has a weekly outdoor market; these are the best places to eat seasonal, local food at the lowest prices; ask your accommodation which day the local market runs
