Things to Do in Diyarbakır: Complete Guide from the Walls to Hevsel Gardens 2026

Diyarbakır is not a city you can "pass through." Its black basalt walls, 2,000 years of history, the grandeur of the Ulu Mosque, Hevsel Gardens stretching along the Tigris River and the Ten-Arched Bridge — this city demands at least two full days. And everything is within walking distance of everything else.

Here are the must-see places in Diyarbakır — with a day-by-day plan.

Diyarbakır Walls — UNESCO's Black Fortress City

The first thing that greets you in Diyarbakır: black basalt walls. Approximately 5.5 km long, these walls were built by the Romans in 349 AD and used through Byzantine, Arab, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.

Key Gates:

  • 🚪 Dağ Kapısı (Harput Gate): Northern entrance, largest and most impressive
  • 🚪 Mardin Gate: Southern entrance, panoramic views from the wall
  • 🚪 Urfa Gate: Western entrance

Key Towers:

  • 🏰 Keçi Burcu: Best panoramic viewpoint over Hevsel Gardens
  • 🏰 Yedi Kardeş Burcu: Most imposing tower on the walls

Hevsel Gardens — A 10,000-Year-Old Green Space

Just outside the walls, stretching along the Tigris River: Hevsel Gardens — on the UNESCO list together with Diyarbakır's walls.

Continuously cultivated since 8000 BC, these gardens fed the city with vegetables and fruit for centuries. They're still an active agricultural area today.

Best viewpoint: Keçi Burcu or atop Mardin Gate — gardens and Tigris visible together.

Ulu Mosque — One of Turkey's Oldest Mosques

Built in 1091 AD, Diyarbakır's Ulu Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Anatolia. A masterpiece of Seljuk architecture — the stone craftsmanship and courtyard are extraordinary.

Note: Long sleeves and headscarf required for visits (a scarf is fine). Shoes removed at entrance.

Ten-Arched Bridge — The Legend Over the Tigris

Built in 1065 AD, the Ten-Arched Bridge (Silvan Köprüsü) has stood over the Tigris for almost 1,000 years.

10 arches, 180 metres long — and people still walk across it and take photos today. At sunset, with the Tigris reflection, it creates extraordinary images.
