Sea Kayaking in Turkey 2026: Kekova, Fethiye and the Turquoise Coast

Sea kayaking in Turkey offers something that no boat tour, no guided walk and no road can provide — the silence of paddling through clear turquoise water, the ability to enter sea caves and hidden coves that larger vessels cannot reach, and the extraordinary experience of looking down through your kayak hull at 2,000-year-old submerged ruins just metres below the surface.

The Turquoise Coast of southwestern Turkey — particularly the Kekova and Fethiye areas — is one of the finest sea kayaking environments in the Mediterranean, combining exceptional water clarity, dramatic limestone coastline, ancient archaeological sites and warm conditions from May through October.

Kekova — Paddling Over a Sunken Ancient City

Why Kekova is the standout kayaking destination in Turkey:

The ancient Lycian city of Simena was partially submerged by an earthquake in the 2nd century AD. Today, the walls, streets, staircases and building foundations of the old city lie in 2–8 metres of water — clearly visible through the crystal-clear surface, close enough to touch with a paddle.

A sea kayak is the optimal way to experience Kekova. While tour boats must maintain a distance from the ruins, a kayak can navigate directly over them — you paddle over 2,000-year-old stone walls, peer down at doorways and cisterns, and pass ancient sarcophagi on the shoreline above the waterline.

The Kekova kayaking experience:

Route: Most guided kayak tours of Kekova depart from Üçağız village (the main access point) or from Kaş (28 km west). The full Kekova route covers approximately 12–15 km and takes 4–5 hours of paddling time with stops.

What you see:

• The submerged Lycian ruins directly below your kayak for a sustained section of approximately 800 metres
• Simena Castle (Kaleköy) — a medieval castle perched on a rocky promontory; the small village below it has no road access and is reached only by sea
• Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff face above the waterline
• Üçağız village — a small fishing community on the lagoon

Difficulty: Easy to moderate — the water in the Kekova lagoon is sheltered and generally calm. Suitable for beginners with basic paddling instruction. Some sections near the open sea can have swell in windy conditions.

Guided tours from Kaş: The most common option. A full-day guided kayak to Kekova from Kaş (approximately 28 km round trip, 6–7 hours including stops) — suitable for reasonably fit paddlers. Half-day tours from Üçağız are available for those wanting a shorter introduction.

Fethiye and Ölüdeniz — Lagoon and Island Kayaking

The Fethiye area offers a completely different kayaking character from Kekova — the focus here is on the extraordinary turquoise lagoon of Ölüdeniz, the Twelve Islands archipelago and the sea caves of the Fethiye Bay.

Ölüdeniz Lagoon

The Ölüdeniz lagoon is one of the most photographed places in Turkey — turquoise water in a sheltered bay enclosed by a sand spit and pine-covered hills. By kayak, you can enter the inner lagoon (restricted to small non-motorised vessels) that boats cannot reach, and explore the shoreline that the vast majority of visitors see only from the beach or from above while paragliding.

Difficulty: Easy — the lagoon is sheltered and calm throughout the season.

What to rent locally: Several rental operators at the Ölüdeniz beach offer sit-on-top kayaks for self-guided paddling — typically €10–20 per hour for a single, €15–25 for a double. No experience necessary.

The Twelve Islands (On İki Adalar)

The island archipelago south of Fethiye offers a full day of open-water kayaking between uninhabited islands, through sea caves and over rocky reefs. The water here is exceptionally clear.

Guided tour: Full day island kayaking from Fethiye, including sea caves, snorkelling stops and a lunch break on a beach — approximately €60–90 per person with all equipment and guide.

Butterfly Valley by Kayak

Butterfly Valley (Kelebek Vadisi) is accessible from Ölüdeniz by boat or, for kayakers, by a 4–5 km paddle around the headland. The approach by kayak gives a perspective unavailable from the tourist boats — you paddle beneath the towering cliff walls that enclose the valley and arrive on the beach from the sea.

Difficulty: Moderate — the headland section can have swell; best done on calm mornings.

Göcek Bay — Turquoise Coast's Best Kept Kayaking Secret

Göcek Bay is less well-known than Kekova or Fethiye for kayaking, but arguably the most beautiful paddling environment on the coast. Six uninhabited islands in a sheltered bay, all accessible by kayak, with sea caves, hidden beaches and extraordinary water clarity.

Self-guided or guided: Kayak rental in Göcek town from approximately €15–25 per day — the protected bay makes self-guided paddling appropriate for beginners. Guided tours available for the sea cave circuit.

Practical Information for All Locations

Best time for sea kayaking in Turkey:

• May–June: Water comfortable from approximately 22°C; excellent visibility; no summer crowds; ideal conditions
• July–August: Peak season; water warm (26°C+); more wind in the afternoon on exposed sections; book tours in advance
• September–October: Arguably the best months — warm water, reduced crowds, calmer conditions, excellent visibility

What to bring:

• Swimwear and a change of clothes for after
• Reef-safe sunscreen — applied generously before launching
• Water shoes or sandals that stay on in the water
• A dry bag for phone, camera and valuables — most operators provide one
• Hat and sunglasses — sun exposure on the water is more intense than on land

Physical requirements:

• No prior kayaking experience required for guided tours on sheltered water
• Basic swimming ability is recommended
• Guided tours are suitable for children from approximately age 6–8 depending on operator
