The Grand Bazaar Food Guide: What to Buy, Taste and Take Home
Most visitors to the Grand Bazaar come for carpets, ceramics, jewellery and textiles. Fewer think of it as a food destination. But the Grand Bazaar and its immediate surroundings — particularly the Egyptian Spice Bazaar a short walk away — contain some of Istanbul's best food shopping, and excellent street food in the surrounding lanes.
Spices Worth Buying
The spice stalls of the Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Spice Bazaar carry products genuinely superior to what is available in European supermarkets. Sumac — sour, fruity, used across Turkish and Middle Eastern cooking — is excellent quality. Isot biber (smoked Urfa pepper) is one of the most distinctive spice flavours in Turkey and very difficult to source outside the country. Pul biber (Turkish red pepper flakes) is far superior to generic chilli flakes. Blends for specific dishes — köfte spice mix, lahmacun paste — are practical gifts. Buy from established stalls rather than vendors standing in doorways offering samples.
Turkish Delight to Take Home
The best lokum is made with real fruit extracts and quality nuts. Look for shops that display the product in open trays and cut pieces to order. Vacuum-sealed pre-packaged lokum is always inferior. Pistachio and walnut lokum are the most worthwhile versions.
Nuts and Dried Fruit
Antep pistachios — roasted, salted or plain — are far superior to anything widely available in Europe. Cashews, almonds and walnuts are also excellent. Mixed nut and dried fruit combinations are practical and well-packaged for gifts.
What to Eat While You're There
For breakfast: fresh simit from carts outside the bazaar entrances with a glass of tea. For lunch: small soup restaurants (çorbacı) and köfte shops in the surrounding streets — fast, inexpensive and unpretentious. For sweet: pastane shops near Mahmutpaşa market carry good helva, baklava and börek.
