The 8 Best Summer Destinations in Turkey for 2026
Turkey's summer season runs roughly from May to October, with the peak in July and August. The country's diversity — from Mediterranean coastline to 3,000-metre highland plateaux — means that summer here is not a single experience but many. Here are the eight destinations that show Turkey at its summer best.
1. Bodrum
Bodrum is Turkey's most celebrated summer resort — and it earns the reputation. The peninsula has a combination of excellent beaches, a vibrant old town centred on the medieval castle, a well-developed restaurant and nightlife scene, and proximity to some of the most beautiful gulet cruising waters in Turkey. The marina district at night is one of the most enjoyable places in the country. Summer is peak season and it shows — prices are high and accommodation books up early.
2. Fethiye and Ölüdeniz
Fethiye is the gateway to the Turquoise Coast at its most spectacular. Ölüdeniz — a partially enclosed lagoon of extraordinary colour, 15 minutes from the town — is one of the most photographed places in Turkey and genuinely lives up to the images. The paragliding from Babadağ Mountain above the lagoon is world-class. The surrounding coastline — accessible by boat, kayak or the Lycian Way footpath — is outstanding.
3. Cappadocia
Cappadocia in summer is hot by day but the evenings are pleasant and the balloon flights operate reliably in good weather. The landscape — fairy chimneys, rose-coloured valleys, ancient underground cities — is extraordinary in any season, but summer allows for ATV tours, horse riding and hiking through the valleys in the long evening light. Cave hotel rooms provide natural insulation against the midday heat.
4. Kaş and the Lycian Coast
Kaş is a small, stylish town on the Lycian Coast — less developed than Bodrum or Fethiye and better for it. The diving is the finest in Turkey. The surrounding coastline — the sunken city of Kekova, the ancient city of Patara and its long beach, the Saklikent Gorge — offers exceptional day trips. The town itself has good restaurants and a genuinely local atmosphere that larger resorts have lost.
5. Trabzon and the Black Sea Highlands
For those escaping the heat, the Black Sea highlands offer something the Aegean and Mediterranean cannot: genuine cool. Trabzon is the base for exploring the region — Sümela Monastery, the Uzungöl lake, the Ayder highland plateau and the Kaçkar Mountains. Temperatures in the highlands remain comfortable through July and August when the south coast is at its most oppressive.
6. Çeşme and Alaçatı
Çeşme and Alaçatı, on the Aegean coast west of İzmir, have become two of Turkey's most fashionable summer destinations. Alaçatı in particular — a beautifully restored stone-house village turned boutique hotel and restaurant district — has a quality of atmosphere that rivals anywhere in the Mediterranean. The consistent wind makes it the best windsurfing destination in Turkey.
7. Antalya
Antalya is the largest city on the Mediterranean coast and the best base for exploring the region. The Roman old town — Kaleiçi — is one of the finest in Turkey. The Düden waterfalls, Aspendos theatre and the extraordinary museum (one of the best archaeological museums in the country) are all within easy reach. Summer is hot but the sea is correspondingly warm and the infrastructure excellent.
8. Ayder Highland Plateau
Ayder, in the Kaçkar Mountains above Rize, is one of Turkey's most underrated summer destinations. The highland plateau sits at approximately 1,300 metres above sea level, has thermal springs, is surrounded by waterfalls, and provides access to some of the finest mountain trekking in the country. The traditional Black Sea village atmosphere and the extraordinary green landscape make it a genuinely restorative summer escape.
