Best Time to Visit Eastern Anatolia: A Month-by-Month Guide

Eastern Anatolia is Turkey's most remote and most rewarding region — but it is also one where timing matters more than almost anywhere else in the country. The winters are severe, some roads close under snow for months at a time, and the contrast between the frozen landscapes of January and the wildflower-covered meadows of June is absolute. Getting the timing right makes an enormous difference to what you can see and how comfortably you can travel. Here is a month-by-month breakdown.

January and February — Deep Winter

January and February bring heavy snowfall to the mountain passes and highlands of Eastern Anatolia. The Tahir Pass, the Güzeldere Pass and several other key routes between cities close periodically and sometimes for extended periods. Temperatures in Van, Erzurum and Kars regularly drop below -15°C and can reach -30°C in particularly cold years.

This is not a recommended time for most visitors. Transport becomes unpredictable, many guesthouses and restaurants in smaller towns reduce operations, and the landscape — while dramatically beautiful under snow — is largely inaccessible.

Exception: if you are specifically interested in winter photography or in seeing cities like Kars under snow, January and February offer genuinely extraordinary imagery, provided you are prepared for serious cold and logistical challenges.

March and April — The Transition

March is still risky in the higher elevations — snowmelt begins but passes remain unpredictable. The lower elevations around Van and Diyarbakır begin to warm and become accessible. April sees the region opening up significantly: the snow retreats, the rivers rise with meltwater, the first wildflowers appear.

Late April is the beginning of a viable travel window for most of the region. However, some highland routes and the roads to the higher yaylas (summer pastures) remain snow-covered until May.

May and June — The Best Months

May and June are the finest months for visiting Eastern Anatolia. The snowmelt is complete at most accessible elevations, the landscape is at its most dramatic — vivid green meadows, full rivers, wildflowers — and the temperatures are comfortable rather than hot. Van Gölü reflects the surrounding mountains in peak condition. The road to Ishak Pasha Palace, the Ani ruins and the Kaçkar highland routes are all fully open.

June begins to warm but remains pleasant in the highlands. The days are long. This is the peak of the short Eastern Anatolian spring, and it is extraordinary.

July and August — Hot and Accessible

July and August are warm to hot in the lower elevations — Van, Erzurum and the valleys can reach 35°C. The highland routes are at maximum accessibility, and this is the season for trekking in the Kaçkar Mountains. The Doğubeyazıt area and Ishak Pasha Palace are best visited early morning in summer to avoid the midday heat.

This is the busiest season for domestic tourism in the region, though international visitor numbers remain low by Turkish standards.

September and October — The Second Peak

September and October are the second-best months for Eastern Anatolia, and arguably better than May-June for those who prefer slightly warmer temperatures and lower river levels. The landscape transitions from green to the amber and gold of autumn. Lake Van is at its warmest for swimming. The Ani ruins and Ishak Pasha Palace are in full autumn colour.

October begins to cool noticeably at altitude. By late October, the first snows arrive on the higher passes.

November and December — Closing Down

November brings the first serious cold and snowfall to the highlands. By December, the region is moving into winter mode. Travel remains possible in the lower elevations but becomes progressively less comfortable. Most guided tours to Eastern Anatolia do not operate in December, January or February.

Summary: When Should You Go?

For first-time visitors: May, June or September — the landscape is at its best, everything is accessible and the temperatures are ideal.

For trekking in the Kaçkar Mountains: July and August — maximum accessibility and long days.

For autumn colour and quieter roads: October — beautiful but increasingly cold toward month-end.
