Summer in Bodrum: What to Do, Eat and Where to Stay
Bodrum is the most recognisable name on Turkey's Aegean coast — and in summer, it earns the attention it receives. The peninsula has a combination of genuinely beautiful coastline, a well-preserved medieval castle, a lively old town, excellent food and an atmosphere that manages to be both sophisticated and relaxed. Here is a practical guide to making the most of it.
What to Do in Bodrum
Bodrum Castle and the Underwater Archaeology Museum is the single most important sight in the town. The Castle of St Peter — built by the Knights of St John in the 15th century — houses one of the finest underwater archaeology museums in the world. The shipwreck hall, containing Bronze Age and Byzantine vessels recovered from the Aegean seabed, is extraordinary. Allow two to three hours.
Gulet cruises are the defining summer activity on the Bodrum Peninsula. Day cruises to the bays of the peninsula — Göltürkbükü, Torba, Yalıkavak and the surrounding waters — depart from the marina daily. A longer blue voyage of four to seven nights, heading south towards Göcek, Fethiye and Kaş, is the most distinctively Turkish holiday experience available anywhere on the coast.
Windursfing and kitesurfing at Bitez Bay, on the northern side of the peninsula, draws serious water sports enthusiasts. The reliable Aegean wind makes this one of the best locations in Turkey for both disciplines.
Bodrum town after dark is one of the most enjoyable urban evenings in Turkey. The marina district, the bars and restaurants around Cumhuriyet Street and the beach clubs at Gümbet are all active from late evening well into the early hours in peak season.
The Best Beaches
Bitez is the most relaxed and family-friendly beach on the peninsula — a shallow, calm bay with good facilities and the windsurfing school at one end. Less crowded than the beaches closer to town.
Gümbet is immediately adjacent to Bodrum town and the most accessible. It is popular and busy in peak season — better for those who want activity and company than for those seeking seclusion.
Türkbükü on the northern peninsula is the most fashionable beach — a calm bay lined with beach clubs and boutique hotels that attract a well-heeled Turkish and international crowd. More expensive than the other options and justifiably so in terms of quality.
Akyarlar on the southwestern tip of the peninsula has the best wind conditions for water sports and the most dramatic views across to the Greek island of Kos.
Where to Eat
Bodrum has one of the best restaurant scenes on the Turkish coast. The old town streets around the castle are lined with meyhanes — traditional Turkish restaurants serving cold meze, grilled fish and rakı. The quality here is generally high and the setting, with the illuminated castle as backdrop, is excellent in the evening.
For fish specifically, the restaurants along the marina waterfront are the most scenic. Order whatever is freshest on the day rather than dishes listed as house specialities — the difference in quality is significant.
The Tuesday and Friday open-air market in the town centre is the best source of local produce, cheese, olives and street food. Arriving mid-morning allows you to experience it at its busiest and most atmospheric.
Where to Stay
Bodrum town centre — close to the castle and the old town streets — suits those who want to walk everywhere and be in the middle of the action.
Türkbükü — on the northern peninsula — offers the most stylish boutique hotel options and the most peaceful bay setting.
Yalıkavak — also on the northern peninsula — is well-established, has a good marina and a quieter atmosphere than the town. Well-suited for those who want quality without the peak-season crowds.
Bitez is the best option for families — calm beach, good local restaurants and a more relaxed pace than the town.
When to Go
July and August are peak season — maximum warmth, maximum activity and maximum price. June and September offer nearly identical weather with significantly smaller crowds and better accommodation availability. September in particular is excellent: the sea is at its warmest from the accumulated summer heat and the peninsula is noticeably quieter.
