Türkiye's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts hold an embarrassment of riches — ancient cities that shaped Western civilisation, turquoise bays that have barely changed in centuries, stone villages above the sea, and river deltas where boat tours wind through reeds past Lycian rock tombs. Eight days is the right amount of time to do this stretch justice, moving from İzmir to Fethiye without rushing. Day 1–2: İzmir, Çeşme & Alaçatı

The tour begins in İzmir, Türkiye's third-largest city and one of its most relaxed. The Kordon waterfront, Kemeraltı Bazaar and the iconic Clock Tower at Gündoğdu Square give a flavour of a city that has been continuously inhabited since 3000 BC. The second day reaches west to the tip of the Çeşme Peninsula — one of the Aegean's most beautiful headlands — where the Fener lighthouse looks out over the water and Çeşme Castle rises above the marina.

Alaçatı, a short drive inland, has become one of Türkiye's most fashionable destinations without losing its character. Its stone houses, windmills and boutique-lined bazaar streets feel genuinely like a different century. Nearby Sığacık — a small Ottoman castle town on its own bay — is the kind of place most visitors never find.

Day 3: Ephesus & Şirince

This is the centrepiece of the tour. Ephesus was one of the great cities of the ancient world — at its peak home to 250,000 people, capital of Roman Asia Minor, and site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. What survives is extraordinary: the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre that held 25,000 spectators, the marble-paved Curetes Street, the Terrace Houses with their original mosaics and frescoes still visible beneath protective roofing. Walking through it with a guide who knows the stories behind each column is a completely different experience from going alone.

After Ephesus, the village of Şirince sits in the hills above — a Greek Orthodox community that was abandoned in the 1923 population exchange and has since been carefully restored. Its cobblestone lanes, stone houses and fruit wine shops make for a perfect afternoon before the descent to Kuşadası and the Aegean coast.

Day 4: Bafa Lake, Bodrum & Castle of St. Peter

The route south passes Bafa Lake — a former Aegean bay, cut off from the sea by river silt over the centuries, now a quiet freshwater lake surrounded by olive groves and Byzantine monastery ruins. It is the kind of place that appears on no tourist map but stays in the memory.

Bodrum occupies a peninsula between two bays and has been a meeting point of cultures since antiquity. It was here that Herodotus — the father of history — was born, and here that King Mausolus built his tomb, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, another of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Castle of St. Peter, built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century, dominates the harbour and houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The Bodrum Marina and bazaar streets fill the afternoon before continuing to Marmaris.

Day 5: Gökova Bay & Akyaka

Gökova Bay is one of the most protected natural areas on Türkiye's coast — a deep blue inlet flanked by pine-covered mountains, largely free of the development that has claimed other parts of the Aegean. The Lovers' Road winds along its northern shore with views that stop conversation.

Akyaka, at the head of the bay, is built in the Muğla vernacular style — wooden-balconied houses, narrow streets — and sits at the mouth of the Azmak River, a cold-water stream that flows from a spring through reeds and willows into the sea. The boat tour on the Azmak is slow, cool and completely unlike anything else on this itinerary.

Day 6: Dalyan — Rock Tombs, Caretta Turtles & Göcek

Dalyan is built along a river channel between Köyceğiz Lake and the sea, and the boat tour here is the highlight of the day. The Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff face above the river date to the 4th century BC — the facades still sharp, the scale still impressive. The channel winds through reed beds to İztuzu Beach, one of the most important nesting sites in the Mediterranean for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), protected since the 1980s.

Göcek, reached in the afternoon, is a small marina town favoured by sailing yachts — quiet, clean, with a bazaar that sells local olive oil and honey rather than tourist trinkets. Fethiye, the night's base, sits at the head of a bay with its own Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs above the town.

Day 7: Ölüdeniz & the Fethiye Boat Tour

Ölüdeniz — the Dead Sea — is Türkiye's most photographed view: a turquoise lagoon, perfectly sheltered, ringed by pine-forested mountains that drop straight to the water. It appears on more travel magazine covers than almost any other sight in the country, and it looks exactly like the photographs. The lagoon is a protected area, so the water stays impossibly clear.

The final afternoon is a boat tour along the Fethiye coast — a string of coves, swimming stops and cliff faces that shows a different scale of the same landscape. This is the kind of day that makes people extend their stay.
