Eastern Anatolia Tour from Germany 2026: Lake Van, Ishak Pasha and Ani Ruins

Eastern Anatolia is Turkey's most remote, most dramatic and, for those who make the journey, most unforgettable region. Lake Van — one of the world's largest soda lakes, with a colour that shifts from turquoise to violet depending on the light. Ishak Pasha Palace rising from a clifftop above the Iranian border with Mount Ararat behind it. The ghost city of Ani on the Armenian frontier, empty and windswept, where a medieval city of 100,000 people once stood. These are not minor sights. They are among the most extraordinary places in the world.

From Germany, Eastern Anatolia is more accessible than most people realise. Here is everything you need to plan the trip.

Why Eastern Anatolia Is Worth the Journey from Germany

Most Turkey tours from Germany go to Istanbul, the Aegean coast or Cappadocia. These are all excellent destinations. But Eastern Anatolia offers something none of them can: genuinely remote landscapes, an almost complete absence of international tourist crowds and a historical and geological variety that rewards the additional journey.

Visitors who make it to Eastern Anatolia consistently describe it as the highlight of their time in Turkey — including those who have visited the country multiple times before. The region is not difficult to travel in, but it does benefit significantly from expert local guidance, which is why a guided tour is the most practical and rewarding way to approach it.

Getting from Germany to Eastern Anatolia

By air: The most practical route is a flight from Germany to Istanbul (direct, 3–3.5 hours from Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin) followed by a domestic connection to Van, Erzurum or Ağrı. Turkish Airlines operates all three routes from Istanbul. Total journey time gate-to-gate is approximately 5–6 hours. Alternatively, fly to Istanbul and join a guided tour that begins there and includes in-country flights.

Which German airports: Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport have the best Turkish Airlines connections. Berlin Brandenburg, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart also offer direct Istanbul services. From Istanbul, domestic flight time to Van is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

When to fly: Book domestic connections at least 6–8 weeks in advance for summer departures. Business class upgrades on domestic Turkish Airlines flights are often available at modest premiums and significantly improve the comfort of the connection.

The Best Eastern Anatolia Tour Itinerary from Germany

A well-constructed Eastern Anatolia tour from Germany covers the following in 8 days:

Day 1: Fly Germany → Istanbul → Van. Transfer to hotel. First view of Lake Van at sunset.

Day 2: Lake Van — boat to Akdamar Island, visit to the 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross. Afternoon exploration of Van city and Van Fortress.

Day 3: Van to Doğubeyazıt. Ishak Pasha Palace — morning visit before the day-trip coaches arrive. Mount Ararat viewpoint. Optional visit to the Urartian fortress above the palace.

Day 4: Doğubeyazıt to Kars. Afternoon exploration of Kars — the Kars Museum, the Russian-built city centre and the Kars Castle.

Day 5: Kars to Ani. Full morning at the Ani ruins — the ghost city on the Armenian border. Cathedral, mosque, bridge ruins and city walls. Return to Kars for lunch, then continue to Erzurum.

Day 6: Erzurum — Çifte Minareli Medrese, the Seljuk tombs, the old bazaar. Afternoon flight or road transfer toward the west.

Day 7: Buffer day — allows for weather delays (common in the east), additional site visits or a slow morning before the journey home.

Day 8: Return flight to Germany via Istanbul.

What to Expect: Climate, Conditions and Practicalities

Eastern Anatolia has the most extreme climate of any region in Turkey. In winter, temperatures drop well below -15°C and many mountain passes close. In midsummer, the high plateau is warm by day but cool at night. The best travel windows from Germany are May, June, September and October — when the weather is settled, the mountain roads are fully open and the landscape is at its most varied.

Accommodation in Van, Kars and Erzurum ranges from basic to comfortable; there are no international luxury chains in most of this region, but several locally-run hotels with good facilities and genuine character.

Mobile connectivity is generally good in the cities but can be limited in the Ani ruins area and on some mountain roads. A local SIM card purchased at Istanbul Airport is the most practical solution.

Why a Guided Tour Makes Particular Sense Here

Eastern Anatolia is the one region of Turkey where a guided tour provides advantages that go significantly beyond convenience. The distances between key sites are long. Several of the most important sites — Ani, Akdamar Island — require local logistical knowledge to visit efficiently. The historical context of the region — Urartian, Armenian, Seljuk, Ottoman and Kurdish layers within a relatively small area — is genuinely complex and significantly more rewarding with expert interpretation.

A guided tour from Germany that includes all in-country transport, accommodation and a specialist local guide removes every logistical barrier and allows you to focus entirely on what you are seeing.
