5 Days in Istanbul: A Day-by-Day Itinerary That Actually Works

Five days is enough to feel Istanbul properly — not to exhaust it, but to understand why people come back. The city is larger, more layered and more surprising than most first-time visitors expect. Here's a day-by-day itinerary that balances the essential sights with the neighbourhoods that don't make every list.

Day 1 — The Historic Peninsula

Start at Hagia Sophia as early as possible. The building is quieter in the first hour after opening, and the scale of the interior — nearly 1,500 years old, spanning both Christian and Islamic history — is best absorbed without crowds.

The Blue Mosque is directly opposite. Visit outside prayer times to enter the interior. Topkapı Palace deserves at least two to three hours — the Treasury and Harem sections in particular. End the afternoon at Eminönü: the fish sandwich stalls on the waterfront, the Galata Bridge, the first view of the Bosphorus.

Day 2 — Grand Bazaar and Beyoğlu

The Grand Bazaar opens at 9am and closes at 7pm. Go early. It's one of the largest covered markets in the world — over 4,000 shops across 61 streets — and it takes time to move through at a reasonable pace. The adjacent Egyptian Spice Bazaar is smaller and more manageable.

Cross the Galata Bridge on foot in the afternoon and climb the Galata Tower for a 360-degree view across the city. The evening belongs to İstiklal Avenue and the backstreets of Beyoğlu — the city's most concentrated nightlife district.

Day 3 — Bosphorus

Take a ferry from Eminönü or Kabataş heading north. The public Bosphorus ferry is inexpensive, runs regularly and covers the full stretch of the strait past Rumeli Hisarı fortress, Ottoman-era waterfront mansions and the two suspension bridges. It's one of the best things to do in Istanbul and costs very little.

Return via Bebek or Arnavutköy — two of the Bosphorus's most charming neighbourhoods — for coffee or lunch on the water.

Day 4 — The Asian Side

Most visitors never cross to Asia. This is a mistake. Kadıköy's morning market, the seafront promenade, the café culture of Moda — this is a quieter, more local Istanbul that feels entirely different from the historic peninsula.

In the afternoon, move to Üsküdar. The Maiden's Tower can be seen from the shore. Mihrimah Sultan Mosque is one of Sinan's finest. Çamlıca Hill offers the broadest panoramic view of the city available anywhere.

Day 5 — Eyüpsultan and the Golden Horn

Eyüpsultan Mosque is one of Istanbul's most significant religious sites and one of its least touristy — a genuine neighbourhood rather than a managed attraction. The Pierre Loti viewpoint above the mosque looks down across the Golden Horn.

Spend the afternoon in the Fener and Balat neighbourhoods: coloured timber houses, Greek Orthodox churches, neighbourhood cafés. These streets have been attracting visitors for several years now but still feel genuinely lived-in.
