Ölüdeniz and Fethiye: The Perfect Summer Combination

Ölüdeniz and Fethiye are two kilometres apart and completely different from each other — which is exactly why they work so well together. Fethiye is a functioning market town with good restaurants, a lively bazaar and the practical infrastructure of a regional centre. Ölüdeniz is one of the most photographed places in Turkey, a partially enclosed lagoon of extraordinary colour framed by forested mountains and a curved pebble beach. Together they make one of the finest summer destinations on the Turkish coast.

Ölüdeniz — The Lagoon

The Ölüdeniz lagoon sits at the base of Babadağ Mountain, accessible from Fethiye by dolmuş (shared minibus) in about 20 minutes. The lagoon itself — Blue Lagoon — is a protected area where swimming is permitted in designated zones. The water is shallow and very clear, with a colour that shifts from turquoise to deep blue depending on the light.

The beach running alongside the lagoon is a long pebble shore. Beach clubs, sunbeds and facilities are available along the length. It is busy in peak season — arriving early secures the best position.

Paragliding from Babadağ is Ölüdeniz's other defining experience. The launch site sits at approximately 1,700 metres; the flight path takes you over the lagoon and the coastline below. It is consistently rated one of the top ten paragliding sites in the world and lives up to that reputation. Tandem flights require no experience and take approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Fethiye — The Town

Fethiye is a genuine working town of around 85,000 people. The Tuesday market is one of the finest in the region — a sprawling open-air market selling fresh produce, textiles, spices and local food that draws both residents and visitors. The fish market in the evening — where you choose your fish from the display and have it cooked in one of the surrounding restaurants — is one of the most enjoyable eating experiences on the coast.

Fethiye Museum contains a good collection of Lycian artefacts and an important multi-lingual stele. The Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff above the town — most notably the Tomb of Amyntas — are visible from much of the town and worth the short climb. Paspatur — the old bazaar quarter — has been well-restored and has a good selection of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Day Trips from Fethiye and Ölüdeniz

Butterfly Valley is accessible by boat from Ölüdeniz beach — a dramatic steep-sided canyon with a waterfall at its head, accessible only by sea. Boat trips run throughout the day in summer.

Kayaköy — the abandoned Greek village 8 kilometres from Fethiye — is one of the most unusual sights on the Turquoise Coast. The village was abandoned in 1923 following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey; the stone houses and two churches remain largely intact, slowly returning to the hillside. A sobering and beautiful place.

Saklıkent Gorge — 45 kilometres from Fethiye — is one of the deepest gorges in Europe. In summer, walking through the cold water of the gorge floor is a genuinely refreshing experience.

The Lycian Way footpath begins near Ölüdeniz and runs along the coast to Antalya. Even a single day's walking — the section between Ölüdeniz and Kabak is among the finest — gives a sense of the scale and beauty of the trail.

Getting There

Fethiye is served by Dalaman Airport (DLM), approximately 45 minutes by road. Direct flights from most major European cities operate throughout the summer season. From Istanbul, flight time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

When to Go

June and September are ideal — warm enough for swimming, cooler than the July-August peak and significantly less crowded. July and August are full peak season: hot, busy and expensive. May is excellent for those who don't mind slightly cooler water.
