First-Time Cultural Tour Travellers: The Complete A to Z Packing and Travel Guide
First-Time Cultural Tour Travellers: The Complete A to Z Packing and Travel Guide
"How do I pack? What do I bring? What's expected on tour?" — If it's your first cultural tour, these questions are completely normal. This guide covers everything you need to know before joining an AlaTourqo tour, including a complete packing checklist.
1. Documents — The Most Critical Category
Without these, nothing else matters:
- ✅ Passport — minimum 6 months' validity remaining
- ✅ Turkish ID card — sufficient for diaspora travellers entering Turkey
- ✅ Flight ticket — digital and physical copy
- ✅ Travel insurance — European Health Card is not valid in Turkey
- ✅ Tour booking confirmation — the confirmation email from AlaTourqo
- ✅ Prescription medication documentation — doctor's letter if carrying medications
💡 Tip: Photograph all documents and email them to yourself. If anything gets lost, you'll thank yourself later.
2. Money — Smart Preparation
- ✅ Bring euros or dollars in cash — exchange in Turkey for the currency advantage (1€ ≈ 54 TL)
- ✅ Airport currency exchange — avoid it, rates are poor
- ✅ At least 2 different bank cards — if one fails, the other covers you
- ✅ On AlaTourqo tours, accommodation, meals and transfers are included — €150–200 for personal spending is enough
3. Clothing — Comfort and Respect
A cultural tour means a lot of walking. Clothing choice matters:
Must-pack:
- 👟 Comfortable walking shoes — ancient cities, stone streets, rocky paths. No heels.
- 🧥 Light cardigan or jacket — Black Sea and East Turkey evenings are cool even in summer
- 👕 Long-sleeved shirt — required for mosque visits
- 🧣 Light scarf or shawl — doubles as headscarf for women, useful for men too
- 👖 Long trousers minimum 2 — mosque visits + comfortable walking
Region-Specific Extras:
| Tour | Extra Clothing |
|---|---|
| Black Sea | Waterproof jacket, ankle boots |
| East Anatolia | Warm jacket (high altitude), boots |
| Southeast | Light clothing, sun hat |
| Aegean / Mediterranean | Swimming costume, sandals |
4. Health — Small Preparations Prevent Big Problems
- ✅ Prescription medications — minimum 2-week supply
- ✅ Painkiller (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
- ✅ Stomach medication — Imodium or similar
- ✅ SPF 50+ sun cream — essential for Southeast and Aegean
- ✅ Hand sanitiser
- ✅ Plasters — long walks can cause heel blisters
- ✅ Insect repellent — useful in East Anatolia and Black Sea highlands
5. Technology and Electronics
- ✅ Power bank — charging opportunities are limited on long tour days
- ✅ Multi-USB charger — charge multiple devices from one hotel socket
- ✅ Extra memory card — if you use a camera, bring backup storage
- ✅ Plug adapter — Turkey uses the same plug type as Europe (type C and F), no adapter needed
6. Personal Care
- ✅ Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo (small sizes — hotels usually provide basics)
- ✅ Sunglasses — essential in open-air sites
- ✅ Small shoulder bag or belt bag — practical for bazaars and museums
- ✅ Tissues / wet wipes — small town restaurants may not have paper
7. What NOT to Pack
- ❌ Too many shoes — 1 trainers + 1 sandal is enough
- ❌ Full-size perfume bottles — bring travel size or skip
- ❌ Expensive jewellery — be careful in tourist areas
- ❌ A full suitcase — leave at least 30% empty for things you'll buy in Turkey
