ATV and Jeep Tours in Cappadocia: A Different Way to See the Valleys
Cappadocia's fairy chimneys, volcanic valleys and ancient cave settlements are extraordinary to explore on foot — and walking is genuinely the best way to experience some of the region's most detailed terrain. But the landscape is vast, the valleys are numerous, and some of the most striking viewpoints and remote geological formations are accessible only by vehicle. ATV and jeep tours have become two of the most popular ways to cover more ground, reach more remote areas and see the landscape from a different perspective. Here is what you need to know.
ATV Tours: What to Expect
All-terrain vehicles — quad bikes — are available for self-guided or guided tours throughout the Göreme area. No specialist licence is required. Most operators provide a brief safety and operation briefing before departure.
The standard ATV experience involves following a predetermined route through the valleys — typically Rose Valley, Red Valley or the terrain around Üçhisar. Routes last approximately two to three hours. The vehicles are single or two-person, depending on preference. The pace is self-determined — you can stop wherever you choose along the route.
What makes ATV tours particularly worthwhile is access. The dirt tracks that connect Cappadocia's valley systems are too rough for standard vehicles but well-suited to quad bikes. Viewpoints that require a 45-minute walk can be reached in minutes, leaving more time to spend at the location itself.
Sunset ATV tours are popular — departing in the late afternoon and timing the route to reach a high viewpoint as the light changes. The colours in the volcanic rock at sunset are extraordinary.
Jeep Tours: A More Social Experience
Guided jeep tours — typically using modified 4x4 vehicles with open backs — cover broader distances than ATV tours and are better suited to groups. A typical day jeep tour visits multiple valleys, underground cities, viewpoints and sometimes a pottery workshop or local village, with a guide providing commentary throughout.
The advantage of jeep tours over walking tours is simple: more ground covered in the same time. A well-planned day jeep tour can include Derinkuyu Underground City, the Ihlara Valley, the Selime Monastery and multiple valley viewpoints in a single day — a circuit that would take several days on foot.
Sunrise jeep tours, timed to reach the main viewpoints as the balloons launch, offer one of Cappadocia's most memorable morning experiences without requiring an early wake-up call as extreme as the balloon flight itself.
Practical Information
ATV tours: book through any established operator in Göreme. Wear closed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dusty. Helmets are provided. Children above a minimum age (usually 16 for solo riding) can participate.
Jeep tours: most hotels and guesthouses in Göreme can arrange bookings. A full-day tour including lunch typically costs between €40 and €80 per person depending on what is included.
Both activities operate year-round, though summer dust and winter mud affect conditions. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions.
