Turkish Hammam: What to Expect on Your First Visit

The Turkish hammam — hamamı — has been a central institution of Ottoman and Turkish life for centuries. At its peak, Istanbul had hundreds of functioning hammams serving every neighbourhood. Most have closed. But the tradition survives, the great historical hammams still operate, and a visit to a hammam remains one of the most distinctively Turkish experiences available to a visitor. Here is what to expect, what to do and what not to worry about.

The History and Function

The Ottoman hammam served as far more than a bathing facility. In an era before domestic plumbing, it was the primary place for personal hygiene. It was also a social institution — where business was discussed, marriages arranged, news exchanged. Women had their own hammams or their own days, giving them one of the few spaces for unchaperoned socialising outside the home.

The architecture of a traditional hammam reflects this function. A vaulted central chamber (the hararet or hot room) with a heated marble platform (the göbektaşı, literally "navel stone") at the centre, flanked by smaller private alcoves. The heat comes from the hypocaust system beneath the floor — the same technology Roman baths used.

The Process: Step by Step

You arrive, pay, are given a peştemal (thin cotton wrap) and a key for a private changing cubicle. Undress, wrap yourself in the peştemal, put on the wooden sandals (takunya) provided, and proceed to the hot room.

In the hot room, you lie on the marble platform and sweat. The heat is dry-humid — not sauna-style but gentler, warmer and more enveloping. After 10-15 minutes, an attendant (tellak for men, natır for women) will scrub you with a kese — a coarse exfoliating mitt. The quantity of dead skin removed is typically surprising. After scrubbing, you are covered in foam from a soap-soaked cloth and given a thorough wash.

An optional massage follows — usually a firm, functional massage rather than the therapeutic deep-tissue type. After the hammam itself, you return to the changing area, are wrapped in towels, offered tea and given time to cool down. The full experience takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

What to Wear

Men wear the peştemal the hammam provides, wrapped around the waist. Women wear the peştemal or their own swimsuit if preferred. Undergarments remain on or off according to personal preference — the attendants are entirely professional about this. Do not bring jewellery or valuables into the hot room.

The Great Hammams of Istanbul

Çemberlitaş Hamamı, near the Grand Bazaar, was built by the great Ottoman architect Sinan in 1584. The domed central chamber is visually extraordinary. It operates as a genuine hammam, not a tourist attraction, though it is well-accustomed to visitors.

Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı, adjacent to Hagia Sophia, was also built by Sinan (1556) and is the most beautifully restored hammam in Istanbul. It is more expensive than most and positioned toward the luxury end of the market.

Tarihi Galatasaray Hamamı in Beyoğlu has been operating since 1481 and maintains a strongly traditional atmosphere.

What Does It Cost?

Standard hammam services in Istanbul's historic hammams range from approximately €30 to €80 depending on the establishment and the package. This typically includes the scrub and foam wash. Massage is additional. Luxury hammams charge more. Neighbourhood hammams — which still exist in Turkish cities outside tourist areas — charge a fraction of this.

Practical Tips

Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before. Drink water before and after — the heat is dehydrating. Arrive without expectations of luxury and you will probably be pleasantly surprised. The experience is functional, cleansing and genuinely restorative rather than spa-like.
