Tunceli and Munzur Valley: Turkey's Most Overlooked Natural Wonder

There are parts of Turkey that even experienced travellers haven't heard of. Tunceli — also known by its historical name Dersim — is one of them. Situated in the eastern reaches of the country, surrounded by the Munzur Mountains and cut through by rivers of startling turquoise clarity, Tunceli is arguably the most naturally dramatic and least visited province in Turkey. For those willing to go slightly off the well-trodden path, it offers something genuinely rare: a landscape and culture entirely its own.

Where Is Tunceli?

Tunceli province sits in eastern Anatolia, approximately 170 kilometres north of Elazığ and 200 kilometres south of Trabzon. It borders Erzincan, Bingöl, Muş and Elazığ provinces. The terrain is mountainous throughout — the Munzur range defines the northern edge of the province, with peaks reaching above 3,000 metres.

The provincial capital, Tunceli city, is a modest town on the banks of the Munzur River. It serves as the base for exploring the national park and the surrounding valleys.

The Munzur Valley National Park

Munzur Valley National Park — Munzur Vadisi Milli Parkı — is one of Turkey's largest national parks by area and one of its least visited. The park encompasses the upper Munzur River valley, a series of cold springs emerging from the limestone mountains, dense forests of oak, juniper and black pine, and a river system of extraordinary visual clarity.

The Munzur River runs cold and fast throughout the year, fed by snowmelt from the Munzur range. Its colour — a vivid, mineral turquoise — is the result of the limestone geology through which it flows. In spring, when the surrounding meadows are in bloom and the river is at peak flow, the valley is among the most beautiful places in Turkey.

The springs (pınarlar) that feed the Munzur are considered sacred in local Alevi tradition — the landscape here has a spiritual significance that adds another layer of meaning to the physical beauty.

Rock Tombs and Ancient History

Tunceli's ancient history is less well-documented than many Turkish provinces but no less interesting. The Urartu civilisation, which dominated eastern Anatolia in the 9th to 7th centuries BC, left traces here. Rock-cut tombs — similar in form to those found in Van and Ahlat — are scattered across the hillsides above the valley. The ruins of Mazgirt Castle, overlooking the Munzur River from a commanding position, date from the medieval period and offer a further historical layer to the region.

The Alevi Cultural Tradition

Tunceli has a predominantly Alevi population — a distinct branch of Islam with its own religious practices, music, philosophy and cultural traditions. The region's Alevi heritage is expressed in its sacred springs, its cemevi (Alevi house of worship) architecture, and a musical and oral literary tradition centred on the saz (a long-necked lute) and the poets who have used it.

For visitors interested in Turkish cultural diversity beyond the Sunni Ottoman tradition that dominates most heritage tourism, Tunceli offers something genuinely different.

Getting There and When to Go

Tunceli is accessible by road from Elazığ (approximately 2 hours) or from Erzincan via the northern mountain route (approximately 2.5 hours). There is a small airport serving Tunceli with limited connections.

Spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit. The valley is at its most dramatic in spring when the river is high and the meadows are flowering. Summer is warm but the high-altitude terrain remains pleasant. Winter brings heavy snow to the mountain passes and significantly limits access.
