White Water Rafting in Turkey 2026: Köprülü Canyon and the Best Rivers

Turkey's rafting scene is one of the Mediterranean's best-kept secrets. While most visitors associate Turkey with ancient ruins and turquoise beaches, the country's rivers — cutting through deep limestone canyons in the Taurus Mountains — offer white water experiences that compete with anything in Europe. Köprülü Canyon is the undisputed centrepiece, but it is far from the only option.

Here is everything you need to plan a rafting trip in Turkey in 2026.

Köprülü Canyon — Turkey's Premier Rafting Destination

Location: Antalya province, approximately 90 km northeast of Antalya city — about 1.5 hours by road.

Köprülü Canyon National Park follows the Köprüçay River through a dramatic limestone gorge. The canyon walls rise to 400 metres in places, the water is clear and cold from mountain springs, and the surrounding forest of stone pines (kızılçam) is extraordinary. The route also passes two Roman bridges — Oluk Bridge and Bugrum Bridge — that have been standing since the 2nd century AD and are now used as launch or exit points for different sections of the rafting route.

The Routes

Standard route (12 km, approximately 2.5–3 hours on water):
This is what most operators offer. The route includes a mix of Grade 2 and Grade 3 rapids — powerful enough to be genuinely exciting, manageable enough for complete beginners. The canyon section is the most dramatic; the river widens and slows in the lower section before the take-out point.

Extended route (22 km, approximately 4.5–5 hours):
Adds the upper section of the river, which includes Grade 3+ rapids. Better for those who have rafted before and want more sustained white water.

Family route (shorter section, Grade 1–2):
Several operators offer a gentler 6–8 km section specifically suited to families with children from approximately age 6–7. Calmer water, shorter duration, same canyon scenery.

What's Included in a Köprülü Rafting Trip

Standard operator packages typically include:

  • Transport from Antalya, Side or Alanya (pickup from your hotel)
  • Helmet, life jacket and paddle
  • Experienced guide per raft (ratio typically 1 guide per 6–8 participants)
  • Lunch at the canyon (usually a barbecue by the river)
  • Transport back to your hotel

Prices (2026): Full package with transport from Antalya: approximately €25–45 per person — one of the best-value rafting experiences in the Mediterranean. The price varies by operator and season; July–August prices are higher.

Age and Ability Requirements

  • Minimum age: Most operators: 7–8 years for the standard route; 12 for the extended route
  • Swimming ability: You do not need to be a strong swimmer — life jackets are worn throughout — but basic swimming confidence is helpful
  • Physical fitness: Moderate fitness required — you will be paddling for 2.5–3 hours with rest stops

The Best Season for Rafting in Turkey

April and May — the river is at its highest from winter snowmelt; this produces the most powerful rapids and the most exciting water. The canyon is also cooler and less crowded. For experienced rafters, this is the best time.

June and September — comfortable water levels, warm temperatures, less crowded than peak summer. The sweet spot for most visitors.

July and August — the most popular months; water levels are lower which slightly reduces the intensity of the rapids, but the experience is still excellent. Book in advance as operators fill up. Temperatures can reach 40°C — the river provides welcome cooling.

October — water levels rising again after the dry summer; late October can provide good conditions. Some operators begin reducing schedules.

Avoid November–March — most operators suspend operations during winter; water temperatures are very cold and some sections may be inaccessible.

Other Rafting Rivers in Turkey

Dalaman River (Muğla Province)

The Dalaman River in Muğla province is Turkey's second major rafting destination, offering Grade 3–4 rapids that are more challenging than Köprülü Canyon. The river runs through a scenic gorge with pine forest and is typically combined with a visit to the Fethiye or Dalyan area.

Best for: Experienced rafters wanting more technical white water
Season: March–October
Duration: Full day rafting experience; approximately 14 km of active water

Çoruh River (Artvin Province)

The Çoruh River in northeastern Turkey is one of the great rafting rivers of the world — Grade 4–5 rapids through a deep gorge in the Kaçkar Mountains. It attracts experienced international rafters specifically. Note: dam construction has significantly changed the character of some sections in recent years.

Best for: Expert or advanced rafters
Season: May–June (peak flow from snowmelt)

Zamantı River (Kayseri/Adana Province)

Less well-known but excellent for intermediate rafters — the Zamantı River offers Grade 3 rapids through remote canyon scenery with very few other tourists.

Practical Information

How to book:

  • Most visitors book through their hotel or a local tour operator in Antalya, Side or Alanya
  • Booking directly with the rafting operator at the canyon is possible and sometimes cheaper — but transport from coastal resorts is a significant consideration
  • Book at least 2–3 days in advance in July–August

What to bring:

  • Swimwear worn under the wetsuit provided by the operator
  • Water shoes or trainers that can get wet (sandals are not suitable)
  • Sunscreen (applied before arriving — some operators don't allow reapplication in the water to protect the river)
  • A dry bag for your phone and valuables — the operator typically provides one or has a secure lockbox

What not to bring:

  • Expensive cameras without waterproof protection — GoPro-style cameras are ideal and can usually be mounted on helmets
