Sunset Sailing on Turkey's Turquoise Coast 2026: Gulet Tours and Day Trips

There is a moment on every Turquoise Coast gulet trip that becomes the image visitors carry home. The sun dropping toward the Taurus Mountains, the water turning copper and gold, the wooden deck warm beneath bare feet, a glass of something cold in hand. This moment is repeatable — the Turquoise Coast delivers it reliably, in different forms, from Bodrum to Kaş to Göcek, across six months of the sailing season.

But not all gulet trips are equal, and choosing the right one requires knowing what actually matters.

What Is a Gulet?

A gulet (gület) is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing vessel — typically 15–35 metres in length, with two or three masts, a wide beam and a flat stern deck designed for relaxation. Gulets have been the signature vessel of the Turkish coast since the 1970s when they were adapted from traditional fishing boats for coastal tourism.

Modern gulets range from basic to luxury:

  • Standard gulet: Shared cabins, basic facilities, functional rather than luxurious. The most common format for day trips.
  • Boutique gulet: Private cabins with en-suite bathrooms, better food, more personalised service. Often available for private charter.
  • Luxury gulet: Air-conditioned cabins, premium finishes, chef on board. Available for multi-day Blue Voyage (Mavi Yolculuk) charters.

For day trips and sunset sailings, most visitors encounter the standard or boutique format — both deliver the essential experience.

The Best Sailing Areas on the Turquoise Coast

Fethiye — Best for Island Hopping and Göcek Bay

Fethiye is arguably the finest sailing base on the Turquoise Coast — the large sheltered bay, the Göcek island archipelago (12 uninhabited islands within easy sailing distance) and access to Ölüdeniz and Butterfly Valley make it the most varied day-trip circuit on the coast.

The Twelve Islands day trip: The most popular full-day gulet tour from Fethiye. The circuit visits 5–7 of the islands, with swimming stops at turquoise coves, a lunch stop on board or at a beach restaurant, and a late afternoon return. The water clarity in the Göcek islands is exceptional.

Sunset sailing specific: Several operators in Fethiye marina offer dedicated 3-hour sunset cruises departing around 17:00–18:00 (depending on season), focusing on the most scenic bay sections with the late light on the mountains.

Price:

  • Full day Twelve Islands tour (shared gulet, lunch included): approximately €40–65 per person
  • 3-hour sunset cruise: approximately €25–40 per person

Kaş — Best for Kekova and Archaeological Sailing

Kaş offers a completely different sailing character from Fethiye — the focus here is the combination of clear deep water, dramatic limestone coast and the extraordinary Kekova sunken city visible from the water.

The Kekova day sail: Departing Kaş marina, the gulet sails east to Kekova — passing sea caves, isolated coves and the ruins of ancient Lycian cities on the cliffs above. The approach to Kekova from the water, with the submerged ruins visible and Simena castle on the promontory above, is one of the most spectacular arrivals in Turkey.

Sunset from Kaş: The town's position on the coast with the Greek island of Kastellorizo visible offshore creates a distinctive sunset backdrop — the sunset cruise from Kaş to the Kastellorizo channel at dusk is one of the most visually extraordinary short sailings on the coast.

Price:

  • Full day Kekova gulet tour (shared, lunch included): approximately €45–70 per person
  • Sunset cruise from Kaş: approximately €30–45 per person

Bodrum — Best for Aegean Sailing and Nightlife Combination

Bodrum's gulet scene has a different character — more Aegean than Mediterranean, with the Castle of St Peter as the dramatic backdrop for arrivals and departures. The day trips from Bodrum typically visit the Black Island (mineral springs and volcanic mud), Aquarium Bay and various coves around the Bodrum Peninsula.

Sunset from Bodrum: The castle and the old town at sunset from the water is one of Turkey's most distinctive views. Several operators specifically time their return to Bodrum marina for the last light over the castle.

Price:

  • Full day Bodrum peninsula tour (shared gulet, lunch included): approximately €35–55 per person
  • Sunset cruise: approximately €25–40 per person

Full Day vs Sunset Cruise: Which to Choose?

Full Day TourSunset Cruise
Duration6–8 hours2.5–3.5 hours
Swimming stops3–5 stopsUsually 0–1
LunchUsually includedUsually not included
Best forSwimming, snorkelling, island explorationAtmosphere, photography, couples
Price€35–70€25–45

The honest recommendation: If you have only one day and want the full Turquoise Coast experience, choose the full-day tour — the swimming stops, the variety of coves and the relaxed pace of a full day on the water are what make the gulet experience memorable. The sunset cruise is ideal as a second activity or for those who prioritise atmosphere over exploration.

The Blue Voyage (Mavi Yolculuk) — Multi-Day Gulet Charter

For those with more time, the traditional Blue Voyage — a 4–7 day private or shared gulet charter — is one of the great travel experiences in the Mediterranean. The classic route runs from Bodrum to Fethiye (or vice versa), sailing the coast with overnight anchoring in isolated bays inaccessible by road.

Shared cabin Blue Voyage (6 days, shared gulet): approximately €600–1,000 per person all-inclusive (cabin, all meals, skipper, fuel).

Private charter (whole gulet, 4–8 cabins): from approximately €3,000–8,000 per week depending on gulet size and quality — divided between the group.

Practical Information

Best time for sailing on the Turquoise Coast:

  • May and June: Ideal — warm enough to swim (water 22–24°C), not yet at peak summer crowding, breezy rather than hot
  • July and August: Peak season; crowded marinas, higher prices, very hot; the sea breeze on the water makes the heat manageable; book well in advance
  • September and October: The best months for experienced sailors — calmer winds, warm water still (24°C in September), significantly fewer boats

What to bring on a gulet day trip:

  • Swimwear (multiple sets if possible — things don't dry fast on boats)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the reflection off water intensifies UV
  • Sea-sickness medication if you're susceptible — the Aegean can have chop in the afternoon
  • A light layer for the return journey — evenings on the water cool quickly
  • Cash — some operators require cash payment on board; tips for crew are customary
