Turkey's Most Romantic Hidden Proposal Spots You've Never Heard Of

Everyone knows about the hot air balloon proposal over Cappadocia. It is beautiful, it is genuinely romantic and it works. But Turkey has dozens of lesser-known settings for a marriage proposal that are equally extraordinary — and considerably more private. Here are the best.

Rumkale at Sunset, Halfeti

Rumkale — the ancient fortress that rises from the Euphrates River near Halfeti — is accessible only by boat. The journey upriver through the limestone canyon is atmospheric. The castle itself, perched on a rocky promontory entirely surrounded by water, looks at golden hour like something from a painting. There are almost no other tourists. The silence is complete except for the river. For a proposal with genuine drama and complete privacy, few places in Turkey come close.

The Terrace Above Mardin at Dusk

Mardin's old city is built on a hillside above the Mesopotamian plain. The terrace restaurants and viewpoints along the upper edge of the city look out over a panorama that extends, on clear days, to the Syrian border and beyond. At dusk, when the plain turns gold and the stone buildings of the old city are lit from below, the setting is extraordinary. Several boutique hotels in Mardin's restored Ottoman mansions have private terraces that can be arranged for a proposal dinner.

The Sunken City of Kekova by Kayak

The Kekova area near Kaş on the Mediterranean coast contains the partially submerged ruins of an ancient Lycian city — walls, staircases and storage rooms visible just below the surface of the water. Renting a kayak allows you to paddle through these ruins in near-complete solitude, particularly in the early morning before the day tour boats arrive. Proposing while floating above a 2,000-year-old underwater city, in water so clear you can see the ruins below you, is an experience with very few equivalents.

Sumela Monastery Viewpoint, Black Sea

The Sümela Monastery above Trabzon is built into a cliff face at 1,200 metres. The approach road winds through dense forest. The viewpoint below the monastery — looking up at the carved cliff face with the monastery above and the forested valley below — is one of the most dramatic in Turkey. Early morning, before the tour groups arrive, it is almost entirely empty. The combination of forest, cliff and ancient stone is unlike anywhere else in the country.

The Ruins of Ani at Sunrise

Ani — the ghost city on the Turkish-Armenian border near Kars — is one of the most atmospheric places in Turkey. At sunrise, when the light comes in low across the plateau and the medieval ruins cast long shadows, the setting is extraordinary. Almost no one is there. The silence and the scale of the ruined city — which once housed 100,000 people and is now entirely empty — create a mood that is both melancholy and profoundly beautiful.

The Cliffside at Ölüdeniz

The rocky headland above the Ölüdeniz lagoon — reached by a short walk from the main beach — gives a view over the Blue Lagoon that is arguably the finest on the Turkish coast. In the late afternoon, when the light comes in from the west and the lagoon turns from turquoise to gold, it is a genuinely spectacular setting. Away from the main beach, the headland is quiet even in peak season.

Practical Notes for Planning a Proposal in Turkey

Most of these locations require planning. Rumkale requires a boat tour. The Kekova kayak is best arranged the evening before with a local operator. Ani requires an early departure from Kars. If you are travelling on a guided tour, speak to your operator in advance — many of these settings can be incorporated into an itinerary with a small amount of prior arrangement.

AlaTourqo's honeymoon and proposal planning service can incorporate any of these locations into a bespoke itinerary. Contact us via our Custom Tour Form or WhatsApp to begin planning.
