Turkey is one of the most underrated diving destinations in Europe — and serious divers who discover it rarely go elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The combination of exceptional underwater visibility (often 20–30 metres in the Aegean), warm water from May through November, an extraordinary variety of dive sites — from shallow reefs to deep walls, from ancient amphora fields to submerged cities — and competitive pricing makes Turkey a genuinely outstanding choice.

Why Turkey for Diving?

Visibility: The Aegean coast has some of the best underwater visibility in the Mediterranean — typically 15–30 metres, sometimes more in autumn. This is significantly better than much of the French or Italian Riviera.

Water temperature:

• May–June: approximately 20–22°C — wetsuit recommended
• July–August: 24–26°C — very comfortable
• September–October: 22–24°C — excellent diving conditions
• November: water temperature still around 20°C; many sites accessible

Marine life: Sea turtles (loggerhead — Caretta caretta) are common in the Aegean and Mediterranean; octopus, moray eels, grouper, sea bass, barracuda, seahorses, nudibranchs and occasional dolphins.

Historical interest: Turkey's underwater archaeology is extraordinary — ancient amphora scattered across dive sites, submerged ruins, Byzantine-era anchors. The Aegean coast was one of the ancient world's major trade routes, and its sea floor reflects this.

Kaş — Turkey's Best All-Round Diving Destination

Kaş (pronounced "kash") is Turkey's premier dive destination and one of the best in the entire Mediterranean. The small town on the Lycian coast has more dive centres per capita than almost anywhere else in Turkey, and the sites accessible from here are extraordinary.

Why Kaş stands out:

• Visibility regularly reaches 25–30 metres — exceptional even by Mediterranean standards
• The coastline is largely undeveloped, protecting the underwater environment
• Mix of sites for all levels — from 5-metre beginners' reefs to 40-metre wall dives
• Strong cave and cavern diving options
• Close to the Kekova sunken city — a unique historical dive experience

Key dive sites around Kaş:

Uçağı (the Plane Wreck): A Douglas DC-3 aircraft wreck sitting at 28–42 metres depth. One of the most distinctive dives in Turkey — the fuselage is recognisable, coral growth has taken hold, and the surrounding sea life is dense. Suitable for advanced open water divers.

Kaş Blue Cave: An extraordinary cavern dive — natural light filtering through submerged openings creates the "blue" effect. Suitable for Open Water level with guidance.

Oludeniz Wall: A deep wall dive south of Kaş dropping to 60+ metres. Advanced divers only; exceptional visibility and marine life density.

Kekova Island: Shallow dives (3–12 metres) over the submerged ruins of the ancient Lycian city — walls, stairways and cisterns visible below the surface. Unique historical experience; suitable for all levels.

Bodrum — Wreck Diving Capital

Bodrum is Turkey's largest diving hub in terms of number of operators, and its primary distinction is wreck diving. The waters around Bodrum contain numerous wrecks from different eras.

Key sites:

Osman Gazi Ferry Wreck: The most dived wreck in Turkey — a large passenger ferry sitting at 20–33 metres depth close to Bodrum marina. Penetration possible; numerous resident fish species. Suitable for Open Water and above.

Myndos Gate Underwater Ruins: Partially submerged ruins of the ancient city of Myndos — columns, stone blocks and walls at 5–15 metres. Suitable for beginners.

Bodrum Reef Systems: Several shallow (8–18 metre) reef systems suitable for beginners and improvers; good marine life.

Marmaris — Best for First-Time Divers

Marmaris has excellent shallow sites particularly suited to Open Water courses and first experiences. The protected bay environment provides calm conditions ideal for learning.

Best for:

• Beginners taking their first Open Water course
• Families with children (minimum age for diving varies by operator — typically 10 with PADI or SSI Junior certification)
• Snorkellers who want easy boat access to reefs

Fethiye and Göcek — Hidden Gems

The Fethiye-Göcek area has a large sheltered bay with numerous small islands creating varied dive conditions. Less busy than Kaş or Bodrum; excellent for intermediate divers.

Key sites:

• Göcek Bay wrecks — several scattered wrecks at manageable depths
• Sister's Rocks — pinnacle diving with strong marine life
• Yassıca Islands — shallow reef systems with sea turtle sightings

Dive Qualifications: What Level Do You Need?

No qualification? Most Kaş and Bodrum operators offer discover scuba diving experiences — a supervised shallow dive with a professional guide requiring no prior certification. Typically 1–2 dives at 5–10 metres depth.

Practical Information

Best time to dive in Turkey:

• June–October: Optimal — warm water, best visibility, all sites accessible
• May and November: Good conditions; water cooler but visibility often excellent; fewer divers

• PADI Open Water course (4 days, full certification): approximately €300–450

Equipment: All operators provide full equipment rental. If you have your own mask and fins, bring them — fit is better. Wetsuit thickness recommendation: 3mm for July–August, 5mm for May–June and September–October.
