Paragliding in Ölüdeniz: Why It's One of the Best Flights in the World
Ölüdeniz, on Turkey's southwestern Mediterranean coast near Fethiye, is consistently listed among the world's top ten paragliding destinations — and frequently ranked first. This is not marketing hyperbole. The combination of the launch site on Babadağ mountain (1,969 metres), the flight path over one of the most photographed lagoons in the world, the thermal conditions that allow extended flight times, and the warm, clear weather that makes flying reliable for most of the year creates a paragliding environment that is genuinely difficult to match anywhere on earth. Here is what you need to know.
The Flight: What Actually Happens
Tandem paragliding — flying with an experienced pilot attached to the same glider — is the standard option for visitors. No experience is required. The process begins with a transfer from Ölüdeniz to the launch site on Babadağ, at approximately 1,700 to 1,900 metres altitude. The drive takes 30-40 minutes on a winding mountain road.
At the launch site, your pilot gives a brief safety briefing — typically a few minutes. Take-off involves a short running start into the wind. Within seconds you are airborne. Most people find the transition from ground to air remarkably smooth and non-dramatic.
The flight itself lasts approximately 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the package you book. You fly from the mountain, over the forested slopes, out above the extraordinary turquoise lagoon and beach of Ölüdeniz, with views across the Mediterranean coast and, on clear days, to the Greek islands. Landing is in the beach area adjacent to the lagoon.
The View
The Ölüdeniz lagoon — a partially enclosed bay of extraordinary colour, protected from the open sea by a curved spit of pebble beach — is one of the most photographed spots in Turkey. Seeing it from above, at altitude, with the broader Mediterranean coastline and forested mountains extending in every direction, is an experience that photographs genuinely struggle to capture. The altitude, the scale, the colour of the water and the silence at height combine to produce something that surprises most people who have flown elsewhere.
When to Go
The paragliding season at Ölüdeniz runs approximately from April to November. The most reliable months are May through October, when thermal conditions are strong and consistent and weather cancellations are rare. Summer (July and August) is peak season — more crowded on the ground, but flying conditions are generally excellent.
Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures on the ground. Winter flying is possible on good days but the season is much shorter and conditions less predictable.
Tandem Flight Options
Most operators offer flights in the range of 25 to 45 minutes. Longer options with extended thermal riding are available. Video and photo packages — cameras mounted on the glider — are offered by most operators and produce good footage. GoPro-style footage shot by the pilot during the flight is also available.
Expect to pay between €80 and €150 for a standard tandem flight, depending on duration and add-ons. The difference in price between operators at the same duration largely reflects equipment quality, pilot experience and video quality.
Practical Information
Weight limits apply — typically up to 100-110kg. Height is not a restriction. Wear comfortable clothing with closed shoes. Bring a light layer as it is cooler at altitude than on the ground. Leave bags and valuables at your hotel — there is no storage at the launch site.
Booking directly through established operators in Ölüdeniz is straightforward. All reputable operators are licensed by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority. Avoid booking through unmarked street stalls.
