Ephesus — The Ancient City You Actually Have to See
What is Ephesus?
Ephesus was one of the largest cities of the Roman Empire — population estimates range from 200,000 to 500,000 at its peak. It was a major commercial port, religious centre and the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
What you'll see:
- 🏛️ Library of Celsus: The iconic two-storey facade — one of the most photographed ancient structures in the world
- 🎭 Great Theatre: Capacity 25,000 — still used for concerts
- 🛣️ Marble Street (Curetes Street): The main ceremonial road — lined with column stumps, public fountains, mosaic floors
- 🏠 Terrace Houses (Hangılar): Wealthy Roman homes with intact mosaics and frescoes — extraordinary, requires separate entry
- ⛩️ Temple of Hadrian: One of the best-preserved small temples from the Roman period
Practical info:
- Opening hours: 08:00–19:00 (summer), 08:00–17:00 (winter)
- Museum Card valid
- Best time to visit: Early morning — opens at 08:00, crowds arrive from 10:00
- Visit duration: Allow 2–3 hours minimum; 4 hours with Terrace Houses
What most tours miss:
- Isa Bey Mosque (next to the ruins) — 14th-century Seljuk mosque, beautiful
- Basilica of St John — where the apostle John is said to be buried
- House of the Virgin Mary — 9 km from Ephesus, a pilgrimage site for Christians and Muslims alike
Priene, Miletus and Didyma — The Three That Most Tourists Skip
These three ancient sites are 30–70 km south of Ephesus and form a logical day-trip. On AlaTourqo tours, they're included as part of the Aegean route.
Priene:
A hilltop Greek city that was never Romanised — it looks exactly as it did when Alexander the Great visited in 334 BC. The Temple of Athena and the bouleuterion (council hall) are particularly striking.
Miletus:
Once a major port (the harbour has since silted up), Miletus is where the philosopher Thales lived — the man who first proposed that everything is made of one substance. The theatre is enormous and well-preserved.
Didyma:
The Oracle of Apollo — second in prestige only to Delphi in the ancient world. The temple columns are vast and the scale is staggering. Even in its ruined state, it's one of the most impressive classical sites in Turkey.
Bodrum — History, Harbour and the Aegean
Bodrum is not just a beach resort — it's one of Turkey's most historically significant coastal towns.
What to see:
- 🏰 Bodrum Castle (Castle of St Peter): Built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century, now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology — world-class collection
- ⛵ Bodrum harbour: Walking the waterfront in the morning before the crowds arrive
- 🏛️ Mausoleum of Halicarnassus: One of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (in ruins, but the site and museum are excellent)
- 🐟 Fresh fish: The harbour-front restaurants are excellent for lunch
Practical info:
- Bodrum Castle: Museum Card valid; allow 2 hours
- Best time: Morning visit to avoid heat and crowds
- Beaches: Camel Beach and Gümbet are closest to the centre
Pamukkale and Hierapolis — Often Combined with the Aegean Route
Pamukkale is 200 km inland from the coast — many AlaTourqo Aegean tours include it as a dedicated day.
What you'll see:
- Travertine terraces: White calcium carbonate pools cascading down the hillside — genuinely unlike anything else
- Roman city of Hierapolis: Built above the travertines — the necropolis (cemetery) is one of the largest in the ancient world
- Cleopatra's Pool: An antique pool fed by thermal springs — you can swim among ancient Roman columns
Museum Card valid for Hierapolis archaeological site.
İzmir — Gateway to the Aegean
AlaTourqo Aegean tours start and end at İzmir Airport (ADB). İzmir itself is worth at least one evening:
- 🛍️ Kemeraltı Bazaar: One of Turkey's oldest covered markets
- 🌊 Kordon promenade: The seafront in Alsancak — perfect for an evening walk and dinner
- 🏛️ Agora of Smyrna: Roman-era marketplace in the city centre
