Turkish Lira Exchange Rate: How to Get the Best Rate in 2026
The difference between the best and worst exchange rate in Turkey can be 10–15%. On a €1,200 trip, that's €120–180 lost to a bad exchange decision. This guide tells you exactly where to get the best rate, what to avoid completely and how to handle money day-to-day in Turkey.
The Current Rate Context
At mid-2026 rates, 1 EUR ≈ 56 TRY and 1 USD ≈ 48 TRY. Turkey has experienced significant inflation in recent years, which means:
- The lira rate against major currencies changes continuously — sometimes significantly week to week
- Prices in Turkey are increasingly quoted in euros or dollars for tourist services (tours, hotels, carpet shops)
- ATM and bank rates closely track the real market rate; hotel and airport rates do not
Always check the current rate on Google or XE.com before you travel — and again when you arrive.
Where to Exchange Money: Ranked Best to Worst
1. ATMs (Best Option for Most Travellers)
Turkish ATMs connected to the international Visa/Mastercard network give the closest rate to the real market rate — typically within 1–2% of the interbank rate. This is the most reliable way to access lira in Turkey.
How to use ATMs in Turkey:
- Use ATMs attached to major Turkish banks: Ziraat Bankası, Garanti BBVA, İş Bankası, Yapı Kredi, Akbank — all reliable
- Avoid standalone ATMs in tourist areas (not attached to a bank) — these sometimes charge hidden fees
- Always decline the "Dynamic Currency Conversion" (DCC) offer — when an ATM asks "Do you want to complete this transaction in your home currency (EUR/GBP/USD)?" always select NO / Turkish Lira. DCC gives you a terrible rate — the ATM's bank converts at their rate rather than yours
- Withdraw larger amounts less frequently to minimise fixed transaction fees
Fees to expect:
- Your home bank's foreign transaction fee: typically 1.5–3%
- ATM withdrawal fee: some Turkish banks charge a small fee (typically €1–2 per withdrawal)
- To minimise fees: use a Wise, Revolut or N26 card — these typically offer zero foreign transaction fees and real exchange rates

2. Döviz Offices (Exchange Bureaus) — Good Option in City Centres
Döviz (exchange) offices in Turkish city centres — particularly Istanbul, İzmir and Antalya — offer competitive rates that are typically close to the interbank rate, especially in areas with multiple competing offices.
How to find good döviz offices:
- Look in the streets around the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul (Kapalıçarşı area), the Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) and in Kadıköy — these areas have dense competition that keeps rates honest
- Compare rates between at least two offices before exchanging — rates are displayed on boards outside and can vary
- Avoid offices in hotel lobbies, airports and major tourist sites — their rates are significantly worse
What good practice looks like:
- The rate on the board is what you get — no commission (most reputable döviz offices in Turkey are commission-free; confirm before handing over money)
- Count your money before you leave the counter
3. Banks — Reliable but Slower
Turkish banks exchange currency at competitive rates, typically similar to döviz offices. The disadvantage is queuing — Turkish banks can have significant waiting times during business hours.
When banks make sense: When you need to exchange a larger amount and want the security of a formal transaction.
Banking hours: Generally Monday–Friday 09:00–17:00. Closed weekends.
4. Your Hotel — Avoid
Hotel exchange rates are almost universally poor — typically 5–10% worse than street döviz offices or ATMs. The convenience is not worth the cost.
The single exception: If you need a small amount of lira urgently (taxi to get to the city, first meal) and it's late at night — exchange a small amount at the hotel for immediate needs, then use an ATM or döviz office the next morning.
5. Airport Exchange Counters — Worst Option
Airport exchange counters — in both departure and arrival terminals — consistently offer the worst rates in Turkey, typically 10–15% below the market rate.
What to do instead at the airport:
- The ATMs at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen are major bank ATMs (Ziraat, Garanti etc.) — use these instead of the exchange counters
- Withdraw enough lira at the airport ATM for your first day (taxi, food, initial expenses) — then use döviz offices in the city
Card vs Cash: What to Use Where
Use a card (contactless/chip):
- Quality restaurants and cafés
- Supermarkets and chain stores
- Hotels and accommodation
- Petrol stations
Use cash (lira):
- Street food and market stalls
- Bazaar shopping (always cash — also helps with negotiation)
- Small local restaurants (many prefer or only accept cash)
- Taxis (always cash)
- Entrance fees at some smaller sites
The practical rule: Keep €50–100 equivalent in lira on you at all times. Use your card where accepted and save the cash for markets, street food and taxis.
The Wise / Revolut Advantage
If you travel frequently or want to minimise exchange costs significantly, both Wise and Revolut offer Turkish lira accounts or real-rate currency conversion:
- Wise: Converts at the real mid-market rate with a small transparent fee (typically 0.4–1%). Withdraw from Turkish ATMs at real rate.
- Revolut: Offers real-rate conversion up to a monthly limit (free tier) with zero fees on the converted amount.
Either card used at a Turkish bank ATM, selecting "Turkish Lira" when prompted, will give you a significantly better rate than any physical exchange counter.
Practical Tips Summary
- ✅ Use bank ATMs — decline DCC always
- ✅ Use döviz offices in competitive city centre areas
- ✅ Use Wise or Revolut if you have one
- ❌ Never exchange at the airport unless urgent small amount
- ❌ Never exchange at your hotel
- ❌ Never accept DCC (paying in home currency at ATM or card terminal)
- ❌ Don't exchange large amounts all at once — the lira rate moves, and you may get a better rate later in your trip
