Turkish Ceramics, Tiles and Pottery: What to Look for and Where to Buy

Turkish ceramic art is one of the country's great visual traditions. At its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, the İznik tile workshops produced work of such technical and artistic refinement that examples now sell at major auction houses for six and seven figures. The tradition has diminished from that peak but has not disappeared — hand-painted ceramics are still produced in Kütahya, Avanos and specialist workshops throughout Turkey. Here is how to understand what you are looking at and where to find the best of it.

The İznik Tradition

İznik, a town in northwestern Turkey near Bursa, was the centre of Ottoman ceramic production from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The tiles produced here — used in Topkapı Palace, the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Blue Mosque — are characterised by their vivid cobalt blue, turquoise, red and white palette, and their naturalistic floral motifs: tulips, carnations, hyacinths and stylised saz leaves.

The original İznik workshops have long since closed, but the designs they produced are still referenced throughout Turkish ceramic production. When a seller describes their ceramics as "İznik style," they mean the visual tradition — not origin. Contemporary workshops in İznik itself produce historically faithful pieces using traditional materials and methods.

Kütahya Ceramics

Kütahya, in western Anatolia, took over from İznik as the primary centre of Turkish ceramic production from the 18th century onwards and remains the main production centre today. Kütahya produces both hand-painted quality pieces and mass-produced transfer-print items — the two look similar to the untrained eye but are entirely different in quality and value.

How to tell them apart: look at the back of the piece. A hand-painted piece will have slight colour variation, tiny imperfections in the design, and often a maker's mark. Transfer-print pieces are visually identical with no variation between pieces. A genuinely hand-painted plate takes hours to produce and cannot cost five euros.

Avanos Pottery

Avanos, in Cappadocia, has a pottery tradition stretching back thousands of years — the red clay from the Kızılırmak River has been worked here since the Hittite period. Avanos pottery differs from İznik-style ceramics in form and tradition: it is earthenware rather than tile work, often produced on the wheel, and decorated with simpler, more rustic designs.

Visiting a working pottery workshop in Avanos — where you can watch the wheel being used and in many cases try it yourself — is one of Cappadocia's most worthwhile cultural experiences.

What to Buy and Where

For İznik-tradition tiles and plates: Kütahya's covered market and Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. For Avanos earthenware: buy directly from workshops in Avanos. For wall tiles specifically: Kütahya is the main production source where custom orders are possible.
