Istanbul Airport to City Centre: How to Get There in 2026

You've just landed at Istanbul Airport and you need to get to your hotel. Istanbul has two airports serving different sides of the city, and each has different transport options. This guide covers both — with real prices, journey times and the honest answer about which option is best for your situation.

First: Which Airport Did You Land At?

Istanbul Airport (IST) — European Side
The main international airport, opened in 2018 on the European (western) side of Istanbul. This is where most long-haul and many European flights arrive. It is approximately 35–45 kilometres from the city centre.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) — Asian Side
The second airport, on the Asian (eastern) side of Istanbul. Used primarily by budget airlines (Pegasus, AnadoluJet) and some charter flights. Approximately 45–55 kilometres from the European city centre — further away, but if your hotel is on the Asian side (Kadıköy, Üsküdar), it is actually closer.

From Istanbul Airport (IST) to City Centre

Option 1: Metro (Most Recommended)

The M11 metro line connects Istanbul Airport directly to the city centre. This is the most reliable and cost-effective option for most travellers.

Key stops on the M11:

• Istanbul Airport → Gayrettepe (junction with M2) → Kağıthane → Şişhane → Vezneciler → Yenikapı

Journey time: Approximately 35–45 minutes to central stops (Gayrettepe, Şişhane)

Cost: €1 – €1.50 (using an Istanbulkart — buy one at the airport on arrival; the card itself costs approximately €2 and you load credit onto it)

Why it's recommended:

• No traffic delays — completely independent of Istanbul's notorious road congestion
• Cheap
• Runs frequently (every 10–15 minutes)
• Air conditioned, comfortable

The only limitation: If your hotel is not near a metro station, you'll need a short taxi or tram connection at the other end.

Option 2: Havaist Bus

Havaist (IETT operated shuttle buses) runs from Istanbul Airport to multiple city centre destinations — Taksim, Mecidiyeköy, Kadıköy, Üsküdar and others.

Cost: approximately €3–5 per person

Journey time: 45–90 minutes depending on destination and traffic — significantly less predictable than the metro

How to use: Buy tickets at the Havaist desk in the arrivals hall or online. Buses depart from outside the arrivals exit.

Best for: Travellers staying near Taksim or Beyoğlu who want a direct connection without changing transport.

Option 3: Taxi

Official taxis (yellow) are available from the designated taxi rank outside arrivals.

Cost: approximately €25–45 depending on destination in the city

Journey time: 45–90 minutes depending on traffic — Istanbul traffic is notoriously unpredictable

Important: Always use the official yellow taxis from the designated rank, not drivers who approach you inside the terminal. The meter should start at the standard rate — if a driver offers a "fixed price" that seems high, decline and use the next taxi.

Note: A taxi from Istanbul Airport is not significantly faster than the metro (due to traffic) but is considerably more expensive. The metro is almost always the better choice unless you have significant luggage or your hotel is not accessible by metro.

Option 4: Private Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers (car with driver) are available from numerous providers.

Cost: approximately €35–60 for a standard car, depending on destination

Journey time: Same as taxi, subject to traffic

Best for: Families with children, travellers with lots of luggage, late arrivals when other transport is less frequent.

How to book: Through your hotel, a licensed transfer company, or platforms like GetTransfer or Welcome Pickups. Always book with a licensed company — avoid approaches from unofficial drivers inside the terminal.

From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to City Centre

Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side — which means getting to the European city centre (Taksim, Sultanahmet) requires crossing the Bosphorus.

Option 1: Havaist Bus

Havaist runs several routes from Sabiha Gökçen:

• SAW → Kadıköy (Asian side): approximately 30–45 minutes, €3–4
• SAW → Taksim (European side, via Bosphorus bridge): approximately 60–90 minutes, €4–6 — highly traffic-dependent

Option 2: Metro + Ferry

• Sabiha Gökçen → metro to Kadıköy → Kadıköy ferry to Eminönü or Karaköy
• Total time: approximately 60–80 minutes
• Total cost: approximately €2–3
• This is a scenic and pleasant option — the Bosphorus ferry crossing is itself enjoyable

Option 3: Taxi

• SAW → Kadıköy (Asian side): approximately €15–25, 30–45 minutes
• SAW → Taksim/Sultanahmet (European side): approximately €35–55, 60–90 minutes

The simple answer: For most travellers arriving at Istanbul Airport, take the M11 metro. It is the fastest, cheapest and most reliable option. Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport (you'll use it throughout your stay on trams, ferries and buses) and head directly to your nearest metro station.
