How to Get to North Cyprus: Complete Guide for 2026

North Cyprus — officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) — is one of the Mediterranean's most distinctive and least understood destinations. Recognised only by Turkey, it occupies the northern third of the island of Cyprus and contains some of the finest medieval fortifications, Crusader castles and unspoiled coastline in the entire eastern Mediterranean. Getting there requires a little more planning than most European destinations — but considerably less than most visitors expect. Here is everything you need to know.

The Political Context — What Visitors Need to Know

The TRNC is recognised as a sovereign state only by Turkey. All other countries consider the territory to be the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus, under Turkish military occupation since 1974. This political situation has practical implications for visitors.

EU passport holders and most European nationals can enter North Cyprus without a visa — for stays of up to 90 days. However, the stamp you receive on entry is a TRNC stamp, not an EU stamp, and some countries (historically the Republic of Cyprus among them) have considered this stamp problematic for onward travel. In practice, this issue has largely diminished and most modern passport holders experience no difficulties. If you are concerned, ask the border officer to stamp a separate piece of paper rather than your passport — this request is routinely accommodated.

How to Fly to North Cyprus

There are no direct international flights to Ercan Airport (ECN) — North Cyprus's only airport — from any country except Turkey. All international flights must connect through a Turkish airport, typically Istanbul or Ankara.

From Europe via Istanbul: Fly to Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) with any airline, then take a domestic Turkish flight to Ercan. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus both operate this route. Total journey time from most European cities is approximately 4 to 6 hours including the connection.

From Turkey direct: If you are already in Turkey, direct flights to Ercan operate from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and several other Turkish cities. Flight time from Istanbul is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

The alternative is to fly into Larnaca Airport (in the Republic of Cyprus) and cross overland through one of the official crossing points — of which there are several, including the Ledra Palace crossing in Nicosia. This route adds time but allows you to see both parts of the island.

Crossing from the Republic of Cyprus

If you enter through the Republic of Cyprus, crossing into the North is straightforward at any of the official crossing points. EU citizens and most Europeans can cross freely. You will need to show a passport or ID card. Vehicles hired in the South cannot be taken into the North (insurance does not transfer) — you will need to hire a separate vehicle on arrival or arrange transport in advance.

The Ledra Street crossing in central Nicosia is the most convenient for pedestrians and has been open since 2008. Several crossings are also open for vehicles.

What to See Once You Arrive

The three main destinations in North Cyprus — Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and Nicosia (Lefkoşa, the northern half) — each offer substantial historical interest.

Kyrenia's harbour is one of the most picturesque in the eastern Mediterranean, overlooked by a Byzantine and Crusader castle. The Shipwreck Museum inside the castle contains a 4th-century BC trading vessel — one of the oldest shipwrecks ever recovered.

Famagusta contains one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the world. The Venetian walls, the Gothic cathedral converted to a mosque, and the ghost district of Varosha — sealed since 1974 and only recently partially reopened — are all extraordinary.
