How to Get from Turkey to North Cyprus: 2026 Guide — Flights, Ferry and Tours
You want to get from Turkey to North Cyprus — but you're not sure whether to fly or take the ferry, which port or airport to use, or whether the border crossing is complicated. This guide answers all of it clearly.
North Cyprus is Turkey's closest Mediterranean destination and one of the most historically rich islands in the eastern Mediterranean. Getting there from Turkey is straightforward — the options are more varied than most people expect.
Option 1: Flying from Turkey to North Cyprus
North Cyprus has one airport: Ercan (ECN) — no direct international flights from any country other than Turkey. All flights connect through a Turkish airport.
From Istanbul to Ercan:
- Turkish Airlines — multiple daily flights; approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
- Pegasus Airlines — competitive pricing
- AnadoluJet — budget-friendly option
From Ankara to Ercan:
- Turkish Airlines and AnadoluJet operate direct; approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
Price range: Istanbul–Ercan return approximately €40–90 depending on season and how far in advance you book
Booking tip: Book North Cyprus flights at least 3–4 weeks in advance — particularly in summer and during Turkish public holidays when prices rise quickly.
Option 2: Ferry from Turkey to North Cyprus
The ferry option is slower but cheaper — and ideal if you want to take a vehicle.
Mersin → Famagusta (Gazimağusa):
- Operated by Kıbrıs Türk Denizcilik (KTD)
- Journey time: approximately 12–14 hours (overnight crossing)
- Frequency: several sailings per week (seasonal variation)
- Price: Approximately €25–50 per passenger; vehicle transport additional
Taşucu (Silifke) → Kyrenia (Girne):
- Fast ferry and conventional ferry options available
- Fast ferry: approximately 2.5–3 hours
- Conventional: approximately 8–10 hours
- Frequency: daily sailings in summer season
- Price: Fast ferry approximately €35–65 per passenger
Which port to use:
- Heading to Kyrenia: Use Taşucu — closest and fastest crossing
- Heading to Famagusta or Nicosia: Mersin is more convenient
Entry Requirements: What Do You Need?
Turkish citizens:
TC identity card is sufficient — no passport required for Turkish nationals.
Passport stamp:
You will receive a TRNC entry stamp. Some countries (notably the Republic of Cyprus) have historically considered this stamp problematic. If concerned, ask the border officer to stamp a separate piece of paper — this is routinely accommodated.
Vehicles:
Turkish-registered vehicles can cross. For rental vehicles, confirm insurance coverage with the rental company before crossing.
