Antique Hunting in Turkey: The Best Places to Find Hidden Treasures

Turkey's antique markets sit at the intersection of several extraordinary cultural histories. Ottoman domestic objects, Byzantine artefacts, Seljuk metalwork, traditional Anatolian textiles, Greek and Armenian craft production have all found their way into the markets and shops of Turkey's major cities. For anyone interested in history, craft or beautiful old things, Turkey's antique scene rewards serious exploration.

Çukurcuma — Istanbul's Antique Quarter

Çukurcuma, in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, is Turkey's most concentrated antique neighbourhood. The steep streets running between Cihangir and Galatasaray are lined with dealers ranging from serious specialists to general junk shops.

The Çukurcuma dealers handle an extremely varied range: Ottoman brass and copper objects, old Turkish carpets and kilims, vintage photography and prints, antique jewellery, glassware, ceramics, folk art and textiles from the late Ottoman and early Republican periods. The neighbourhood rewards multiple visits and unhurried browsing.

The Grand Bazaar Bedesten

The inner Bedesten of the Grand Bazaar — the oldest section, identifiable by its heavier stone vaulting — contains specialist dealers in antique jewellery, old coins, Ottoman miniatures, antique textiles and silverwork. The Bedesten is more expensive than Çukurcuma but quality is generally higher and the pieces more thoroughly vetted.

Ankara — The Ulus Flea Market

Ankara's antique market — concentrated in the Ulus district near the old citadel — is less polished than Istanbul's but often more surprising. Prices are generally lower than Istanbul, partly because the international buyer presence is smaller. For those willing to spend time looking, genuine finds are more likely here.

What to Know Before Buying

Turkish law restricts the export of genuine antiques officially classified as cultural heritage. For most antique market purchases — Ottoman domestic objects, early 20th-century furniture, vintage textiles — export is not legally restricted. If buying something significant, ask the dealer for documentation.
