15 Things to Pack When Travelling from Europe to Turkey

Flight booked, suitcase out — but that nagging feeling you're forgetting something? Heading to Turkey after years away is exciting. But arriving unprepared can take the shine off that excitement fast. Here are 15 things you absolutely need when travelling from Europe to Turkey.

Documents — Nothing Works Without These

1. Passport or Turkish ID Card
You need a valid passport or Turkish national ID card to enter Turkey. Check that your passport has at least 6 months' validity remaining. German, Dutch and Belgian passport holders enter visa-free.

2. Travel Insurance
Private health insurance isn't mandatory in Turkey but is strongly recommended. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Turkey. Activate your travel insurance before leaving Europe.

3. Digital and Physical Copies
Passport, insurance, flight ticket — keep digital copies on your phone and physical copies in your wallet. Just in case.

Money — Don't Miss the Currency Advantage

4. Euro or Dollar Cash
The currency exchange advantage in Turkey remains very strong in 2026 — 1€ ≈ 54 TL. Card payments incur bank fees; exchanging cash gives you a better rate. Bring at least €200–300 in cash.

5. Bank Card / Credit Card
Cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas. But in smaller towns, markets and minibuses, cash is still essential. Bring two different cards — if one fails, the other covers you.

Health — Small Preparations Prevent Big Problems

6. Personal Medications
Pharmacies in Turkey are good but bring your prescription medications with you. European prescriptions aren't valid in Turkey. Pack at least two weeks' supply as backup.

7. High-Factor Sun Cream
The sun is intense in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Southeast Turkey. SPF 50+ sun cream bought in Europe is much cheaper than buying it in Turkey.

8. Stomach Medication
A change in diet can upset your stomach. Pack Imodium or similar — you may not need it, but you'll be glad it's there.

Clothing — Comfort and Respect

9. Modest Clothing for Mosques
For mosque visits, long sleeves and long trousers or a skirt are required. Women need a headscarf — a lightweight scarf in your bag always comes in handy.

10. Comfortable Walking Shoes
Ancient cities, bazaars, historic streets — you'll be walking a lot. Cobblestones and marble surfaces call for comfortable trainers, not heels.

11. Light Cardigan or Thin Jacket
Summer evenings on the Black Sea and in East Turkey can be cool. Air-conditioned venues in Istanbul can be freezing. Always keep a light layer in your bag.

Practical Items — Small but Essential

12. Multi-USB Charger or Power Bank
Turkey uses the same plug type as Europe (type C and F, 220V) — no adapter needed. But a multi-USB charger or power bank is invaluable on long tour days.

13. Small Bag or Crossbody Bag
In bazaars, markets and on beaches, a small lightweight bag is far more practical than a large tote. Keep valuables in a crossbody or belt bag in touristy areas.

14. Leave Space in Your Suitcase
You will be bringing things back — this is guaranteed. Spices, Turkish delight, tea, olive oil, handicrafts... Leave at least 30% of your suitcase empty on the way there.

Mental Preparation — The Most Important One

15. An Unhurried Mind
You're returning to a Turkey you've missed for years. Don't rush through the landscapes, the smells, the sounds. Put the phone down sometimes and just live the moment. Some things belong in your heart, not your camera roll.
